Post In need of some opinions...(bed rug or liner?)

I'm very strapped for cash but i decided i needed something to protect the bed of my DC. I went to a shop today and i put a down for a bedliner which will cost me $170 out the door (this price includes the tax and labor...pretty good hook up). The guy at the shop was telling me though, that a bed rug is much better than just getting a bed liner. The lifetime warranty that comes with the bed rug is enough to sway my vote and get me to buy the bed rug, BUT...it'll run me about $320 total. What should i do? Is the extra $$ worth the difference of a bed rug from a bed liner? I like the way the bed rug looks and just by seeing pictures i can tell it'd be better for my bed but the cost is a lot more than i expected to spend. Any opinions? Thanks.

Twism,

I am kinda biased on this one as I have a bedrug. The reason I chose to go with bedrug is for a couple of reasons.
1) liners are usually very slick menaning things slide around a bunch on your liner (Scratching it) and possibly breaking your cargo
2) I can either vacuum it out or hose it out and it does just fine.

yeah, i can see the benefits of having a bed rug over the bed liner. Do you think it's worth the extra dough though? Thanks.

Maybe a thick rubber bed mat for now and save up for Line-X later.
Worked for me. I started with just an OEM Toyota bed mat, saved up for Line-X, ...
now I have a no slip bed mat on top of my spray-in. I'm well protected

Haha...i was going to ask about that. I was surfing the web and found that a rubber bed matt might be good for now. I was also thinking of having the bed mat either under or over the liner. Thanks for that. I hear the bed liners scratch up the paint of the bed, maybe i should get a mat and use it under the bed liner to protect it from scracthing.

Gonna sleep in it or haul in it? If for camping and sleeping on get the rug. If hauling get the Line-X. Both are better choices that the drop in liner depending what your useage plans are and both have good warranties .. I have the Line-X and am very satisified. Hose it down and it's clean, spray w/303 and it looks new.

If you are going to be doing serious hauling, or hauling gravel, dirt or debris a lot, then I would get a spray-in liner like Line-X. If you plan on doing light hauling and want to protect the cargo as well as the bed, then I would get the Bedrug. The last thing I would get is a plastic drop-in liner.

I do occasional hauling and it is more likely to be a piece of furniture or a boy-toy like a big screen TV that I don't want to be damaged or scraped up. I wanted the added protection the Bedrug offers. Also, I am old and fat and not as tough as I used to be, and climbing around on my knees in the back of the truck is much more pleasant with a Bedrug. The Bedrug was originally developed for marine applications, so washing it out with a hose is not a problem.

I am terribly biased though because I really love the Bedrug. I was extremely impressed with how well it fits the bed and it has exceeded all of my expectations. My best advise is to be sure of your functional requirements before you make a decision.

I went with the bedrug. Besides what has already been mentioned, the sound deadening that the rug provides has made my access cab as quite as a car.

You can save a few dollars by installing it yourself. It's a very easy install and only took about 1 hour.

Hey Twism,

I don't know much (at all) about these "bedrugs", so I'll have to make the assumption, that they also cover the sides of the bed as well, like spray-in liners do. Line-X and Speedliner are fairly popular here on the east coast and having 2 friends in the industry who use each liner product repectively, it offers me the opportunity to have a choice in spray-in liners. Spray-in liners also improve the "resale" value of your truck, if my memory serves me correctly. That said, I'll also make the assumption that the bedrug will do the same.

But... I'd also have a couple of questions about the bedrugs as well... such as...
1) What kind of warranty does the bedrug have?
Line-X and Speedliner have a lifetime warranty.
2) Can the bedrug be reparied, if by some chance, it ever gets damaged or will it have to be replaced? (Right off the bat... if replacement "is" the case, I certainly would NOT think a bedrug is worth $300+ when you can get a spray-in liner for about the same... if you shop around!)
Line-X and Speedliner can be repaired if they ever get damaged.
3) What if... dirt and sand get under the bedrug? No doubt it would eventually scratch the paint.
Line-X and Speedliner adhere to the bed and nothing can get under it, hence the reason spray-in liners won't allow rust.

Line-X offers more of a "tooth" or rough surface (if you will) which helps prevent slippage of cargo. Speedliner has a little smoother surface texture, but offers a MUCH better "tensile strenght" meaning... it's somewhat stronger.

Either way though, I'd have to agree with RoundTuit. The combination of BOTH a spray-in liner and a rubber bedmat is probably pretty hard to beat! I think I'd save up for the spray-in liner.

I CERTAINLY would NOT opt for the standard plastic bedliner... PERIOD! I've seen the damage one can do! My '95 Tacoma has an over-the-bedrail bedliner and I can already see where it has worn the paint almost completely off on the top of the bed walls in a couple of places. Next step for that truck... as well as my DC... are a couple of sray-in bedliners.

You can't go wrong with them...

I don't think the plastic liner will fit w/ a bed mat under it. The Bed Rug is worth the extra $$$. Stuff will slide on it though, so you need to secure it. I have a box with emergency supplies that stays in place w/ Velcro. It's great for camping (I also have a shell). Right now I have a bed mat on top of the bed rug (I don't have anywhere to store the mat right now.)

So am I reading this right that the LINE-X /Speedlikner adhere to the bed with the paint still on? I thought the paint was stripped then it was applied?
Yes spray in liners don't allow rust, but if the paint is stripped anyway I would not see the advantage of the rust on the paint. And any rust on the bed itself can be sanded away. LineX isn't horrible at all its actually quite nice.

Quote:
A LINE-X bedliner is a great way to add resale value, whether you spray it on a well used or a new truck bed. According to the NADA* "Official Used Car Appraisal Guide" a LINE-X Bedliner adds $225 in trade-in value to your truck. (*National Auto Dealers Association - Sept. 5, 2000 edition)
someone mentioned this earlier so here is the specifics

My self, I plan to do both the Line-X and the Bedrug. Double the protection, double the value, Use the bedrug for the camping trips, or excursions to the drive-in and the Line-X for the heavy duty moving.

I have the bedrug and so far so good. It is over a year old, I bought it used from a guy on TS and he kept it clean and covered with a camper shell. Well here in Lubbock we have had 3" above the average of rainfall so far this year and this think still looks brand new. Yes I do live in an extreme of dust so there is dirt under my rug, but that's to be expected. Check out my pictures for a peek.

Default Bedrug is nice!

As everyone said, depends on what you want that bed for. I am not a fan of plastic liners, so not an option.
I have the bedrug on board as well, under the ARE LSII cover. I used to take 4x8 sheets of drywall home, do a quick vac, and good as new. It works for me, so I like the Bedrug option. I have mulch and gravel delivered by the yard from the nursery, so, I do not feel I gave any flexibility up. Both options (bedrug vs spray liners) are good. Just depends how you will use it.

Welp...i did it! I went with the bed rug and i must say...i'm pretty pleased with it. It looks good and already i put it to use (helped a buddy of mine move a portable wood closet). The only gripe i have about the bed rug is it's fit. I'm not saying that the bed rug doesn't fit great, cuz for the most part, it fits good but i the way i look at it...for $330+, it should fit snug. I guess asking for the bed rug to fit to a tee is kinda far fetched. Anyways..so i decided on the bed rug and ended up having to spend almost twice the amount i wanted. The plastic bed liner was $170 and i got the bed rug for $340 with everything included (tax, labor). Thanks for all the input you guys gave me.

I had the opposite feeling -- I was impressed it fit as well as it did, particularly after seeing how it looked after I took it out of the shipping carton. I thought to myself there is no way this is going to come out looking as well as some of the pictures I had seen, but it did. I suppose they could have used more hook & loop strips, but given what they provided, mine conforms to the bed pretty well. I can see most of the undulations in the sides of the bed -- e.g., the bump outs on both sides where you slide a 2x6 in between.

My main question is how long will it stay that way. After a few seasons of hot and cold (i.e., freezing) weather I can imagine the adhesive backed Velcro strips coming loose and no longer adhering to the metal. However, nobody has reported anything like that yet.

I think it fits very nice. Can you explain what did not seem right for you? Did you use all of the velcro strips to tighten up all of the corners?
