Default Has anyone replaced a steering wheel?

I am pretty paranoid about replaceing my steering wheel (with a aftermarket one that looks cooler) as there is an airbag. All the people that sell them tell me it totally simple and you just disconnect the power to the airbag. You leave everything but the wheel intact. They all say that an airbag is pretty hard to set off with the power off and the car not being in an accident.

However, this still makes me extremely nervous. Is it really that easy? What do you think it will do in terms of warranty?

I rather do an after market "trim kit" for the steering wheel, but I can't find a good looking one or one that doesnt look like it is a "sticker"

I too have been wondering the same thing. A few shops at home said that due to the airbag, that it is not possible. Also none of them were sure if there was an adapter made by any company that will allow us to run the aftermarket steering wheels. I saw a great looking Grant steering wheel that I wanted to put on but due to the response I got from the shops, I didn't go through with it.

If anyone has done the change out please post in and tell us the outcome and proceedures.

Thanks,
John

I'd wait until you have a front end collision before you bother taking out air bag. once its deployed it worthless. unless of course you want to make some money by taking it out now and selling it on ebay.
to my knowledge there is not a "cooler" aftermarket steering wheel which still utilizes the airbag. (but i could be wrong)
I took out my airbag in my probe and replaced the steering wheel, but that car isnt street legal anymore. and if you dont know what you are doing i'd say dont mess with it. Because I've seen a guy get severely injured while removing his airbag.(his own fist through his mouth and took out most of his teeth)
