Default Anyone painted over chrome on BSM

Was thinking about painting stock body side molding to match color of truck. Has anyone painted over the chrome piece in the middle? I have had a couple of shops tell me the paint will not bond and another told me no problem with getting paint to bond. I was going to replace BSM but had issues behind it that shot doing that mod. If it can be painted over, any thoughts as to how it would look with the chrome piece painted over?

Was your problem similar to mine?

You can paint over the chrome, BUT you must prepare the surface correctly first!

Problem was I bought the truck used and it was not disclosed that the truck had been wrecked. When I removed the first piece off the left quarter panel their was a ghost line all the way around where the BSM was. It would not compound out; the color was also a little different. Body shop guys said that it had been wrecked and when they re- painted the quarter panel they did not remove BSM and the image was from being taped. The diff. in paint color was also an issue.

I wouldn't say for sure your truck has been wrecked unless there are other areas where you know something for sure. Don't think you truck has been wrecked ONLY due to the BSM.

That was pretty much my story also, except my truck was brand new and never in an accident. I think they put the BSM on prior to the paint being totally cured.

Look at my picture in my previous post.

When I put on a rollpan the guy that did the work on that also confirmed the truck had been wrecked because he had found alot of overspray behind the rear bumper I believe. Did not really believe the BSM would have been an issue. Thank goodness that was the first piece I took off. Guy at a parts store where I went to look for aftermarket wide BSM looked and made the comment just as you that the BSM had been installed before paint cured. Anyway, I cannot install 1 3/8' BSM without re painting quarter panel and I am not gonna pay to do that. The guy that did say that he would paint chrome and said it would bond worked in the local Toyota body shop and went out on his own. Have heard good things about his work from asking around. Wonder if it would look OK to paint the whole piece of BSM. hesitations, 1. Is this too wide a band to have a solid color, 2. The chrome piece will make it not look like a solid piece of BSM, will it look funny?

I don't think it would be too wide, the only thing I would think might look funny is the textured outer edges and the smooth chrome area. When painted you will have two different textures.

I say do it, and if you don't like it, you can always remove the paint from just the chrome area and if all else fails you could buy somebody's BSM they took off and just put your back to factory.

Better yet, buys somebody's first and leave yours on the truck and paint the newly boughten BSM to try first. Then you don't have to re-tape and all that if you don't like it.

That's what I would do anyway.
