Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Extended Cab rear quarter window hinges breaking", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Have any of you guys with extended cabs experienced the rear quarter window hinges breaking? I hardly ever pop these windows out, but the other day when I opened the passenger side, one of the hinges that the window swings on broke! I looked at the driver's side and it is cracked and ready to go also. Cheap design Toyota!
Anyway, I was looking at it and think maybe the hinge pins can be knocked out and the broken hinge replaced, and pins reinstalled. It should be covered under warranty, but I can see a hastle allready and was considering just taking care of it myself.
I have a 2001 Tundra Limited ext. cab. and the quarter window hinge has broken twice. The first one was covered under the 3yr 36k warranty, but after that even though I have an extended warranty, it doesn't cover it. The dealer wants $75. (I think). I don't think it's worth it.
I am extrembly disappointed in Toyota. I've owned 6 and this is the first one with that kind of cheap part. Shame on them for not taking better care of us. They should offer a replacement part made out of something stronger.

You do not have an extended warranty. You bought an extended service contract. Big difference. The only real extended warranty is the one Toyota gave us on the oxygen sensors.

Do a search. Mine broke over a year ago and I ordered new ones from a TS sponser? I found this for my 2002 but work your way around the site for the color you need. To change them you need to ease back the door cover to get two bolts and then one screw through the glass. About 10 minutes to swap them out. FYI I think it is an UV issue with the black plastic wishbone piece. I don't know if the new ones have been improved, time will tell.

There was a TSB for that. I ordered my parts thru Steve G. and the price was very reasonable. The TSB was to basically use a new 'improved' part, so make sure you order the new part #. /Mike

Yes -- Shortly after purchasing my used 2002 Tundra, the rear driver's side back window latch broke -- after one use. I had the extended warranty from the dealer and I don't know if that was covered (probably wasn't), but I just went to the Toyota dealer and got a new one. Had to have the vehicle interior color, but it cost about $35 (a rip-off, considering). However, it was easy to install -- took about 15 minutes.
i've had 3 break and i'm not gonna waste money on another factory replacement. i'm gonna try to fabricate the plastic joint out of metal. i have two broken ones on my truck and i kept the first one that broke after i took it off. its gonna be the guinea pig. newer ones may be somewhat better but i bet there still plastic and this joint is under alot of pressure when the latch is snapped closed. i think it will be worth a try.
That's a good idea Tufftundra. I think I saved my original hinges, gotta find them. Maybe it's worth a shot sometime to look around at Home Depot the next time I'm there to see if they have anything that can be used as a replacement hinge pin. I hope I don't continue to find any more of this type of quality on the truck I paid so much for!
Student's Tundra here.
Add me to the list for a broken quarter window latch.
Covered under warranty.

Hinge fixed permenantly! I pulled the 2 hinge pins out and removed the broken plastic hinge. I then took a piece of solid aluminum rod and used the broken plastic hinge as a model to make an aluminum hinge. I chose aluminum because it is easier to machine(grind and drill) than steel but alot stronger than plastic. After I cut the aluminum to length, i drilled holes in each end of the aluminum rod. I used the metal pins to choose the correct drill bit size. I then took a dremel to fabricate the aluminum rod into the same basic shape as the old plastic hinge. It works good as new.Have a pic but I can't figure out how to add it to this post.Check it out in my photo gallery.
Make em out of metal, then they never break! I did.
Like many of you I had both my original latches replaced under warranty despite the fact that I rarely opened those windows, becase the cheap plastic link cracked, and the replacement links started cracking in the same place a year later.
I am very disappointed to learn that they haven't improved the parts, and that they only sell them as part of a very expensive latch assemble. Shame on Toyota.
Not about to spend the money for new ones, I got some small pieces of aluminum and made a pair of replacement ones that should never break. I used the broken ones as a guide and used a die grinder with a carbide bit to do the final shaping. They look and work just like the original ones, and only look different becase I left them bright aluminum instead of painting them black.
Final cost to me, about 1/2 hour of my time, and $0.50 cents worth of aluminum.
