It's all good, what I said about the truck being saving wegith and money was a hypothetical statement... As for the looking cheap and costing more statement, that is for the truck in general, engine, power train, wheels, door panels, interior, stuff like that since people kept arguing how they're cheapening the whole truck...
As for taking someone's opinion... I've actaully test drove the truck twice and drove it more than 15 miles... I've spent more than 5 hours with the truck and this is all before even paying for it... I didn't come to the concultion of buying it off a forum It was through seeing it in person...
I've already talked to Erik about my post He's been the most mature person I've ever seen online, so yeah many great things to get from this forum...
Yea you did speak to me on this topic and you know what I don't think any of us hear are bashing each other's ride (to each there own on there opinion's and thought's) but we all need to respect each other's thought's and opinion's too and I think that has been well established on this form like I told you before it's really hard to get a feel On forums because often at times it comes across as rather cold and Not to the point this is why we have group Tundra T/s meet to get a feel for the user and a face with a user name

Amen! I don't think anyone is doing this. At least I'm only bashing the "current" SMC technology, which for all I know might be top of the line and this an isolated incident. Only time will tell. As for the truck itself I'm very, very impressed. I like the overall look of it and don't mind the fact that it has the same horse power as my Tundra with only 6 cylinders and an extra tranny gear.

Don't worry I'm still trying to figure out how to splice a comma!

Hey Lon and Lonnie,
Hmmm... that brings up a question for you guys. Should I become a Grammer Moderator, whenever Erik is on-line in the Tacoma Forum?! I guess that'd go for all other Mods as well!
Jus' kinddin' wif ya' Erik. Truth is... I kinda' agree with you on the subject of this thread. But, alas... it looks like this is gonna' turn out to be a wait-n-see venture, that might take some time. Wouldn't you agree?

This may be the end of this thread for me... but it's not necessarily the conclusion that I wanted to reach.
GOOD news:
Toyota is replacing the bed as I write this. This is covered under warranty and free of charge to me. By tonight the truck should be (nearly) as good as new.
BAD news:
Toyota Motor Corporation told me that they will not be releasing the results of the tech's examination of the cracked bed. That is for "internal use only". So while Toyota probably learned something about their bed design, they still refuse to help me find a better way to mount the shell. I understand their reasons but I'm stuck in the middle when Toyota is the one that designed the bed and knows it best (strong points, weak points, etc).
Furthermore, when I asked if they would replace the bed if it cracks again, the response was only if breakage was the result of a faulty install or defective bed. I take this to mean that if I put my shell back on and the bed breaks again, I will be on my own. And even if I never put the shell back on, I will be forever paranoid of breaking or damaging the bed. Not good.
GOOD news:
Toyota of Orange really stepped up to the plate and took care of this for me. They exceeded TMC's customer service by far. They offered to buy back my 05 Tacoma at a generous price and sell me any other truck at a discount. I am very pleased with Toyota of Orange; everything they have done throughout this experience has been commendable.
So the final outcome is that I will most likely be trading the Tacoma for a 2005 access cab 4x4 Tundra. I really like the 2005 Tacoma in nearly every way; but the composite bed just isn't going to work for my intended uses.
Thank you all for your support and sympathy. I wish Toyota was more forthcoming about why this bed cracked and if it is likely to happen again. And I hope no one else ends up with a cracked bed.

Humm... unfortunately when they say for internal use only it usually means that there is some sort of design flaw (or at least that’s they way I would interpret it). I'd hate to say this being an '05 Tacoma owner myself. I would think that if it were something that you did or caused they wouldn't hesitate to let you know. I think they might have told you if it was a one-off defect in order to defend the bed design as a whole. Well all I can do is keep my fingers crossed that there is either nothing wrong with the design or that they have a recall of some sort and replace the existing beds with an updated design. Well only time will tell.
And good luck Chris with either you Tacoma or your new Tundra.

I hate to say it but... I was afraid of that! That tells me, Toyota is "possibly" expecting MORE problems of this type and the shear fact of having to replace the WHOLE bed, for the same customer more than one time... "could" get VERY expensive for Toyota! Hope I'm VERY wrong on this, but just buy virtue of the fact, they even said they would only replace the bed again... "only if breakage was the result of a faulty install or defective bed" tells me, there IS a problem! LORD, I hope I'm wrong!!

Toyota of Orange deserves a !! But still, just the simple fact, that they would even offer to buy back and/or replace your '05 Taco that quickly AND EASILY... tells me, that they were [more than likely] privy to the Toyota techs' final asessment of the issue at hand. That said... if the final results had been positive, I doubt Toyota of Orange, would have ever offered this option to you, which further leads me to believe... that all is NOT well with these new composite beds!!!
In ANY case, many, MANY thanks for keeping us all up-to-date and well informed! My hat's off to ya'!
Thanks,
Dave

I just unloaded 930 pounds of paving stones form my Taco bed. There were no ill effects from this. Not sure how this relates to the bed problems but I thought I would put it out there.
