There's a couple of screws in the door pocket. Removes those then pop out the door panel by prying it off with your hand. Remove the latch using a 10mm or 12mm(can't remember) and a philips screw driver.

When I replaced one of mine I did it without removing the door panel. I left the part that is connected to the door attached and just replaced the part attached to the window. Did this by just pressing out the pivot pin. It doesn't take much force. This required using only part of the new latch but it was quick - maybe 5 minutes total.

Default Make em out of metal, then they never break! I did.

Like many of you I had both my original latches replaced under warranty despite the fact that I rarely opened those windows, becase the cheap plastic link cracked, and the replacement links started cracking in the same place a year later.

I am very disappointed to learn that they haven't improved the parts, and that they only sell them as part of a very expensive latch assemble. Shame on Toyota.

Not about to spend the money for new ones, I got some small pieces of aluminum and made a pair of replacement ones that should never break. I used the broken ones as a guide and used a die grinder with a carbide bit to do the final shaping. They look and work just like the original ones, and only look different becase I left them bright aluminum instead of painting them black.

Final cost to me, about 1/2 hour of my time, and $0.50 cents worth of aluminum.

You don't need to remove the assembly, just replace the broken part; the pins holding it just push out.

Default Re: Broken Rear Window Latch!

Per you request I took pictures of the link I made and posted it for you.

Not very spectacular, as I said in my original post, the ones I made are exactly the same shape and size as the original cheap plastic ones, their just made of metal.

Hope the picture helps you

Ana
