Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Broken Rear Window Latch!", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I went to the dealer today and ordered another pair of rear window latches. One already broke misteriously and the other has a small crack in it that is probably going to get worse very quickly and break off.
Anyone else had this experience, aside from Leathernuts (different circumstances)? The parts guy told me that they've been getting alot of people with the same problem and that the new latch was made by a tougher material. However, its not covered under warranty (not even extended warranty) according to the service writer.
The part cost $30, which I'm not going to complain about because a broken latch only makes my vehicle more vulnerable to theft. But if anyone can shed some light on the warranty issue, I'd appreciate it. They also gave me an 800# to call to determine warranty coverage on this particular item which I'm going to call tomorrow.
One of mine did, but it still stays shut so I haven't bothered to take it in yet. Hate to take the truck to the dealership when the only problem in 1 yr and 2 months and 22,000 miles has been a broken window latch. But I bet this thing had only been opened about 3 times before it broke. I would think this should be covered under the 3/36 warranty though.

Depends on which warranty what level, etc. yada yada.
If it was OE warranty (i.e. 3/36) it would be covered. Mine was.
For extended warranty, you may be told this is a trim or switch, which often are not covered. Just focus on what the part name- window latch, and a latch is a mechanical fastening device. Most extended warranties are merely mechanical failure insurance. So if they give you a hard time, check your fine print and good luck.
I wonder if this is mostly a problem with the 2000 model year vehicles? It seems that most of the previous posts, the writers experiencing the problem had 2000 tundras. Maybe they switched to a tougher plastic near the beginning of the 2001MY?
My Tundra is a 2001 and the latch hasn't broken and is used extensively. I have a 7 year-old daughter who is fascinated by it. She opens and closes it at least 5 times everytime she sits in the backseat on trips around town. I couldn't begin to count the total number of times it has been used but it would be well into the hundreds!
Good luck on getting it fixed. It seems like an obvious warranty fix -- don't let the service writer tell you different!!
I have had my 2000 Tundra for 5 years and I just recently discovered that both my rear window latches are broken. The plastic clip that holds the pin broke in half on both assemblies. The windows have rarely been open since owning the vehicle. It appears that this has been a common problem with the Tundra, based on what I have read on the internet.
I am going to talk to the dealer and see if it would be worth contacting Toyota. I doubt it will, since the truck is out of warranty, but I at least want to be heard. They really don't care much once the vehicle is out of warranty. So much for Toyota quality and service.
I love the way the Tundra engine runs and performs, but I have had numerous problems with this vehicle - brake problems, multiple oxygen sensors go bad, broken window latches, dash lights failing - all this before 50,000 miles. My confidence in Toyota quality is not very high and I will probably never buy another Toyota again. I'll buy a Ford or a Nissan truck next time.

There was a TSB on the latches - BO029-01

The window latch problem is a manufacturer design defect. They used plastic and the plastic is brittle. I have had two Tundras, a 2000 and a 2002, and both have broken latches. I've seen others with it too.
I have found that silicone spray helps lube the latch, but it's not a cure, just a help. At least the replacement part is not expensive.
Both my 2000 Tundra latches failed when I open the windows for probably the first time in five years. The dealer said no warrenty and $108 EACH, installed. What a freakin' deal!!
Anyone have the part # on them? One of mine is broken, and the other is about to go. Can't you just replace the plastic center part that breaks but knocking out the pins on the ends?

No. Toyota doesn't sell it by pieces like that. You have to purchase a complete latch.
Part number is 62910-34011-##. The last two is dependent on which side RH or LH.
Does anyone know how to replace the assembly? Mine recently broke and it looks like the door panel needs to be removed to replace them. Is this correct?
