Uh-Oh! That... IS NOT GOOD! You'd think [by now] Toyota would have a clue, with regard to their "paint" problems issues! It seems nearly EVERY vehicle they make, in one way or another, has "some" form of paint problem!!
Hmmm... if this "does" become a "wide-spread" problem, I wonder if it'll turn into a "class-action" thing, like it did over the power window issue, in the VW Beetle?! I'll bet that'll wake Toyota's collective a$$ up!
Hope you guys "can" find some kind of satifaction over this.

I have a DblCab Shortbed and mine is worse than these pics so far, Not too many chips it just looks like someone took sandpaper to the whole area. I have 1800 Miles and it looks like Ive got 200K
Oh my god!...i looked at the pics and wow,if that was my new Taco i would flip out! I blame it on the body design amnd not the paint quality.I don't think any paint would stand up to being sand blasted by the front tires.
Mmm... early Tundra's had the same problem. The lower forward edge of the bed on each side had a bullseye on it for road debris. Toyota would not correct the problem on existing vehicles but added a small piece of black platic as protection for future models beginning in 2001 I think.
I would suspect Toyota might do the same for Tacoma's. In this case it will likely be a piece of clear protection they use on fender flares, etc. The black pieces of plastic for the Tundra were expensive to buy and add yourself as I recall.
I dont know on the DC long bed, I have the short bed and the boards go all the way back and do provide ample protection for the bed area that is being damaged. Has anyone noticed in the pics that most damage is occuring in the same area that is metal, not so much on the fender flares that are painted plastic and stick out further than the metal of the bed do?

Is there anyone with the paint problem on a regular cab? Toyota doesn't even make running boards for the regular cabs so I don't know what the regular cab owners could do to stop rocks from chipping the paint.
AHHH!!! After reading these posts I became quite worried. My 05 Double Cab TRD usually sits on weekdays and gets driven on weekends (im at college...) So I got in today to drive home and notice a paint chip. Not like the ones in the pictures, a chip about fingernail size. Made me so mad. With the recent snow and salt on the roads I guess that is what did it.
Anyways, I called my service manager at Younger and he said to bring it by. They said they are going to cover it this time, but only for customer convience or something. One time only deal he said, unless a recall is later made and I have further problems. Not sure what all they will do to fix it, but it goes in on February 7th. Car is dirty with road salt, I'll snap some pictures tomorrow after I wash it. Not anything big, and is real low on the rear fender (right below the plastic protection piece-- go figure.) But it still made me mad, 600 miles and paint chips. After the paint gets fixed, I am buying the running boards for the truck to hopefully solve the problem, hate to spend the 300bones for them, but I guess it will be worth the insurance.
Oh, and tonight when I got out it sounded like a ticking noise from the engine compartment, anybody know anything about this? It is pretty cold out 10degrees, maybe that is what it was? I don't know.

I think I know why some of you are having paint problems. The trucks are shipped with clear 3M film that protects the paint in the area's that are having paint chips. It would appear some dealerships are removing it as part of the pre-delivery inspection and prep. Big no no. If your truck doesn't have a clear film near the rear wheel rocker panel take it back to the dealer an tell them to put it back on. They can get it from any place that sell's 3M window tint. My truck has it, and you don't even see it unless you look really close. The stuff works great too. I had it on the front of the hood on my old Taco. Protected the paint like a bug guard but without the stupid look of a giant piece of plastic on the front.
My truck has the 3M pieces on the rear fender. They're worthless. They're good for the front of a vehicle and the occasional little rock that might bounce their way, but on the rear fender they're subjected to a constant barrage of rocks and debris. On my truck, the 3M pieces are completely chewed up--they actually look worse than the paint. Some people have talked about having their entire rocker panels 3M'd. I think it would be a total waste of money. That stuff isn't meant to stand up to being sandblasted.
Ok, It has been 2 days since I noticed my 1st chip. 900 miles on my black 05 DoubleCab and I have tons of paint chips! Lots of snow and salt this weekend killed the paint job. Really ticked off about this. The day toyota repaints it I am putting on running boards. This is bad, what all can we do to make this a recall? Toyota is fixing it as a 1 time deal for me, no more after they fix it once... Even on the scotch guards, still chipped up. Along the seam of the rear door, about 4" of paint missing off. I would post pics, but the truck is real dirty. I'll try to get them later this week... NEEDS A RECALL
