Default Water Leaks

I have seen water on the carpet at and under the kick panels just in front of the doors on both the drivers side and the passengers side after driving in heavy rain. Not a lot of water but enough to dampen the carpet. I’ve taken off the door threshold and the kick panel but can’t see where the water may be dripping in. I had the windshield replaced about 15 months ago due to a rock strike but have only noticed the water recently.

Has anyone else seen water here?

Not on the Tundra, but yes. It was due to a faulty window seal on a front window replacement. There could be a lot more water there than you think.

I take it the dealer didn't do the window. I know somone who went through a major headache over this.

The dealer ended up reinstalling a new window to follow up on an aftermarket (insurance) install. They looked at it twice, still a lot of water. The insurance company finally ponied up for the dealer install to stop the water.

I've had insurance replacements done though and they were fine.

Thanks for the information. I was wondering if the water was coming down from the windshield of if going through a couple of deep puddles caused water to somehow get forced up from below through a drain hole of some kind. It seems odd that a leak would develop 15 months after the windshield was replaced unless it has this small leak all along and I just never noticed it until now. I have also noticed it once on both sides and once only on the passenger side.

Actually, this is a common problem with windshield replacements. Problem has probably been there for some time. I would suggest pulling up your floor board carpet. The mold never lies.

I had to take another look at where you were from, MMitsock, because I could understand if you were from SoCal or the southwest...we don't get rain very often .

Is this something the dealer could cover under warranty, or is your basic warranty expired? I wonder if it would be covered anyway since a Toyota dealer didn't perform the services...whatever!

Another option may be to call the place that installed the windshield. Most places cover their install and products for a long time, if not for the 'lifetime' of the car...minus normal wear and tear and stonechips and baseballs and ...you get my point.

Like Yitbos said, I would pull the carpeting and dry it before mold/mildew ruins it completely. There shouldn't be any holes in the Tundra cab that would allow water in, at least I wouldn't think so! Have you drilled thru the floorboards for any wiring or mods that you can think of?

Just posting my thoughts to try and offer help!
Andy

Thanks for the input Andy. I looked at the warranty for the glass installer and it is for as long as I own the truck. I have already dried the carpet and will be contacting the glass company.

We have had a substantial drought here in the NE and it could be that until recently I, by coincidence, never drove in a hard rain over the time since I had the windshield replaced.

Default Windshield leak?

Just a thought, I saw a news show where they determined a large percentage of installers fail to use a primer/activator on the glass before setting it in the adheasive. This could lead to leaks or worse, the windshield popping out in an accident. On the program they showed some windows that were improperly installed and they were able to push them out of the frame by hand. I would have this checked ASAP.

Good luck,
Paul

Way back before I got my Tundra, I had a 1990 Chevy S10 4x4 extended cab. Well, a couple of years after I bought I caught a big hunk of gravel on the windshield and had to have it replaced. I got it replaced at a local windshield installer as recommended by my insurance. A couple of years after that I started noticing my carpet being wet after a rain (I didn't have a garage to park in). That went on for a year or so. I hunted and hunted for the source of that water - I pulled up carpet and interior body panels but never found a hint as to where that water was coming from. Never could really pinpoint it, but I finally concluded that it had to be coming in from around the windshield. The windshield had some thin black rubber trim around the edge of it. I got a tube of black RTV silicone and sealed all cracks and crevices around that trim along the top and sides of the windshield. Never had another wet carpet incident over the next several years that I owned the truck. I suspect that some of the glue that held the window down near the top had released from the glass in the heat of summer creating a small void that water could enter.

Water leak on carpet? First thing I would suspect if you have been running your AC is a plugged condensate drain line - maybe a mud dobber? If you haven't been running your AC that much or it coincides with the truck being outside in the rain, then I would definitely look at the windshield. The windshield may have to be removed and re-glued for a proper fix.
