Default Toyota 6 Disc/In-Dash CD Player

Usually when people upgrade their sound systems, they tend to go the 3rd party/aftermarket approach. Well, I want to upgrade my sound system but not like what "most" people would. I plan on upgrading to an OEM deck.

I currently have the 3 function single disc unit, with six speakers (and I think associated amplifier) in my 2003 Tundra. What I'd like to do is upgrade to the six-disc unit, but add (thanks to the recent discovery) an input through an adapter for an audio-in for my MP3 player. The reason why I want to do it this way is for various reasons. One of them is I don't always have my MP3 player with me, but I always have a CD collection in my truck. I also listen to CDs more then I do the radio.

I suspect I have an amplifier due to this picture (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/photo...Picture806.jpg). If you look right below the AC(?) control unit, behind the bundle of wires, is a silver item. I traced some of the wires from it going to the back of the existing deck. Do you think this amplifier might work with the 6 disc unit? If anyone has any experience with and update/upgrade such as this, how hard is it? Thanks for any help.

I had the 6 six disc dash changer in my Tundra when I first got it. I eventually changed it out and put in an aftermarket setup. The changer worked fine but was very limited as far as features. When I took it out there was a small amp that plugged into the unit but I don't recall the plug type. I sold both the deck and amp on ebay for close to $300.00 but the problem was that I didn't have the security code for the buyer to activate. This code costs about $80.00 at the dealer. I found a web site that supposedly sold them for half that price but ended up getting ripped off for about $35.00. I'm just telling you this you don't make the same mistake. I have a 12 disc changer in my truck right now but it is on the rear passenger floor. You might consider something such as an IPOD or something to save room. I don't know what the Toyota deck goes for new but it probably is way overpriced. Just a thought.

I had the single cd and bought the 6 disc changer off TS classifieds. My setup had the little amp already with the single cd and I had no problem at all getting the 6 disc indash to work perfectly. That was around 4 years ago and still works and sounds great.
Tundra TRX, I don't think you will have any problems getting it to work.

I have been trying to do the same thing with my 2004 Sequoia. First, I've found that with the 2004 Sequoia (maybe the 2003 Tundra as well), has a digital HU, amp and speakers. The 2001,2002 Sequoia's had an analog, so you'll want to be sure you buy the upgrade from a 2003 Tundra to avoid buyng the wrong one. Second, the 6 Disc has 2 amps. One under the dash, for the front speakers and the second under the console for the rear. Third, if you buy one, you'll want to also see if you can get the wire harness for the amps. I've been trying to build one for mine.

What I'm doing now is buying a Premium amp and harness that's supposed to work from oemvalue.com for $165. I don't know if anyone has tried this, but if you have feedback, please let me know.

After 4 month's of trying to do this upgrade, I hope this works.

Good luck, e-mail me if you have any questions.

Thanks for all of the help, and suggestions.

Zombie, the reason why I'm not interested in getting an iPod is because I already have a Tapwave Zodiac (www.tapwave.com, check it out). It has alot of similar features to an iPod, and a lot more. It also has video playback capabilities and I can do a lot more with it then I can with just an iPod. I can also use it as a GPS navigation system (using a Bluetooth antenna). Sorry to hear you got ripped off with the unlock code. I know with some OEM decks, while it is installed you can clear the decks memory unlock code and all by pulling certain fuses.

mitchr, thank you for the reassurance that it will work. My concern is Toyota changed from analog to digital amplifiers from 2003 to 2004 Tundras and I do not want to have to go through that kind of mess. I originally was going to put in a deck from a Scion, but the deck arrived all dented up and it took me a while to get that mess fixed. I even had plans to customize the face of it, and was even going to trade the LEDs from the original amber to a green like the Tundra has.

What I'm considering on doing is just adding an adapter like the TOY-AUX or similar product and leave the existing deck alone. I'd like to have a multiple CD player, such as the OEM deck, so I can listen to multiple CDs or a lot of music when I don't have my MP3 player(s) with me. I've thought about adding XM but I don't like the idea of another monthly bill, even a small one.
