Default Broken window latch in Access Cab Tundra, DIY fix?

My drivers side access window latch broke today when I closed it. The other side broke when the truck was new and was replaced under warranty. I know there is a TSB for it.

I was wondering if I could just order the new and improved TSB parts myself and do my own fix. It isn't worth it to leave it at the dealer for just a window latch. Is this an easy fix? Anybody else tried? Is this sort of thing covered under the Extended Platnium Warranty from Toyota? Thanks for the help.

Mine broke while on vacation - great timing!! I had to call around to find a dealer that had the part in stock. It cost like $32. Make sure you know what color your interior trim is before calling!

All you have to do is pull of the entire door trim - its one big piece. You will need a med (#2) and large (#3) Philips screwdriver. There are one or two screws to remove then the whole panel pops off. OH you DO NOT have to remove the armrest panel - I thought there were screws hidden under it - NOPE! The window latch is held on by two large screws to the body and one to the window. Just reverse the process to get it back together - it was like a 15 minute job while chatting to my brother and dad the whole time!! Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I wish I didn't have to take the door skin off, but I know it isn't that hard.

My passenger side latch broke about a month ago and the driver's side one was cracked almost all the way through. I replaced them myself in less than 5 mins per side, you don't have to remove the door panel completely. Grab the top of the door panel or pry it gently with a screwdriver. Then pull off enough of it so you can access the two bolts holding the latch onto the door, it helps if you wedge something between the door panel and door, I used a balled up sock. There's will be enough space such that that you can use either a box end wrench or open end wrench to remove the 2 latch bolts.

I just replaced the little plastic part that broke. I just pushed out the pins holding in in place and done the same with the new part then reversed the process. I saw really no need to have to pull the door trim off when there wasn't any thing wrong with those parts. Just my .02.

Hey if that worked for you - great. I considered it, but it was SOOO easy to replace the hole unit that I did that. I figured it would be more trouble to pull the pins and I might scratch something in the process - so I just replaced the whole unit!

My .02

tOmato - tomAto right!!

Default Cheap fix-access cab window latch

Nothing like going down the road with your access cab rear windows rattling. Both of my access cab rear window latches broke. I am not sure if the break is the same as the one everyone else is describing or not. The tips of the plastic latch broke on mine. I fixed it by using some small tie straps. I tied one strap around the plastic latch and the metal pin to hold what was left of the latch on the pin and then tied another around the middle of the latch to hold the other tie strap in place. It was really a cheap fix and took all of two minutes to do. Let me know if I need to post pics.

I would like to see a picture if you have one. Sounds like a good fix though. Do they still open and close normally?

If they work it sure beats $30 a latch to replace them.

I posted a picture of my fix at:

It seems to work with no problems opening and closing. I don't know if this is a long term solution but if one of the tie straps brakes it will take about two minutes to fix it again. I guess this fix would depend on where your latch broke.

Dang! I wish I would have seen that before plunking down $37 at Toyota when my driver's side latch broke -- same exact break. It looks like your fix will hold up better than their replacement. Great idea -- especially for when the other side breaks, as I'm sure that it eventually will.

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the picture. That is a great fix. I should have just done that too. If only I knew about it.

I know that latch fix is sorta "rigged" but I am impressed enough to give it a try when my other one breaks. I wonder if we could get this into the "How To" section somehow?
