Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Baby Car Seats?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My new (last july) wife wasn't all that thrilled when I showed up with my 2000 Tundra one day last October. Lets just put it this way - I probably should have talked to her about it first. Anyway, that is another story.
One of her "issues" with the truck (its a 2000 SR5 Access cab) - is its safety factor for a baby seat in the back. Can anyone give me any real world experience or facts regarding safety for children in the back seat of an Access cab? We don't have any kids (she's not even prego yet).... but I'm not sure how much longer thats going to last....
I guess i'll take the award for the sissiest post for 2005 hey fellas?
Nope...not a sissy post. Head over to the Interior & Exterior forum, and do a search for child seat, infant seat, baby seat, booster seat, etc. We had quite a bit of discussion about it a few years ago. There are some seats that fit better than others in the backseat of the Tundra.

got a one month old....and a 2005 DC TSS....the back is cavernous compared to the access cab...go for the 0% apr and upgrade!!!!!!!
My wife and I have a graco snugride car seat for our 10 week old. It works great. There's plenty of room right behind the center console and I don't have to move the seat up at all. Neither one of us have any problems getting the seat in or out. They make bases that you can buy seperately too (for ~$30), so we can use the same car seat in my wife's honda odyssey.
Car seats are designed to work on a full size seat. Even if yours fit, it is not going to be installed properly and the car seat manufacturer would probably not condone it. That is the exact reason I traded up to a DC.

I don't agree with you. The rear seat of my AC is about the same size as the rear seat of a two door civic, and civics are considered "safe" for car seats. My car seat IS installed properly...it's installed exactly the way the instructions indicated. The car seat base for my AC fits the seat perfectly...it doesn't extend over the end or anything like that.
I've also never seen or read anything about car seat manufacturers frowning on these car seat installations in the AC Tundra. I even went down to Babies R Us and asked them, and I checked out consumer reports. Where did you get this information about the seat not being installed properly in an AC? What's different about installing in a DC as opposed to an AC?
There's nothing wrong with installing a car seat in an AC tundra.
I have a 2 year old son and have used both a Graco baby carrier with the base and an Evenflo forward facing carseat. I've never had any problems with them fitting. We put him in the center right behind the fold down console and it works just fine.
The safety of our pending child (my wife is 16 weeks along) was the bargaining chip that I used to convince her that the more expensive DC was the way to go. It was perfect! She kept shaking her head and saying "No, no" so I knew I had to lay down my trump card. Once I did she perked up and it was all about the Double Cab.

I was just commenting on back seats in general. I have never sat in an access cab so I don't know how big it is. I assumed it was smaller then a full size. If it is a full size then there is no problem. Technically you can install a car seat anywhere there is a seat belt. My old Tacoma had seatbelts in the back but it sure would not have been safe to put a child seat back there. I couldn't even find a car seat that fit in my Matrix. I tryed at least 10 one day at Babies R Us. Coincidentally the Matrix is now for sale.
the back seat is the access can is shorter then the DC obviously but Toyota would not have put the LATCH system in the Access cab if it were not safe for a car seat on a shorter seat.
If you really really want to double check your "car seat install" Run buy any police department or Fire department. They are certified to tell you if it is installed correctly or not. Yes I said certified. They will even teach you how to "properly" install the seat. Some times instructions tell you how to install them but people still manage to install them incorrectly and not even know it.
hello, I have two small children that sit in the back of my 2002 Access cab (with 5speed V6!) they fit just fine, yes, it is a little tight, but the kids will actually fit better when they get out of the car seats. The baby seat will fit well in the middle, but you would have to move the front seat way up to fit it behind the front seats. You're other option is to get the double cab of course, but that is a hell of a lot of truck. I love the size, shape, everything about the 2002, it also dosen't have those bulging fender flares that say, look at me!! I'm such a big, strong truck!! I think Toytota bowed in to the pressure over all the comments that the Tundra isn't really a full size truck--screw those guys, it is perfect. The best way to deal with them is to make the new Tundra the biggest thing on planet Earth! Of course, then, they'll probably say it is too big right? I also must say that while I like the new Tacoma, I feel it is a mistake to abandon the "compact" truck market, I mean, the Ranger is the only small truck left, and who wants to buy one of those? I say to Toyota, bring back a small size truck!! Let's have THREE trucks in the fleet, small, medium, and large. cheers, JadeRain

I'm glad that I saw this thread. I may just drop by a dealer with my car seats and ask him to fit them in the tundra AC and DC to see how they fit. It looks like about a 2k difference in price between the AC and DC cabs.
I have 3 small children, including an infant, that i'd like to fit in if I can. otherwise, i'll just get a regular cab.
I just parted ways with my 2001 AC for this same reason. Replaced it with a 2005 DC because of the car seat issue. When my son was first born his car seat fit just fine in the back and snapped right into the base. When he outgrew that and we got a convertible seat it was a total pain. With him still rear facing the top of his car seat came out between the two front seats. All in all it wasn't an issue having just one child. However we're planning on a second one in a few years and once #2 comes along it would have been a damned tight fit for two car seats. Basically my wife would have had to have slid her seat all the way forward to accomodate the additional car seat. Here in NC, you have to keep a kid in a car seat or booster seat till they are 8 years or 80 lbs. I wasn't going to put up with 5 years of my wife sitting 4" from the dash. For only $2k more, I say get the DC. The thing is hulking big compared to my old AC though, and after a week I still can't get it parked quite straight.
