This is a discussion thread titled "Locking Gas Cap for 05 DC?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Was looking for a keyed locking gas cap at the local pep boys and auto zone, with no luck. Why didnt Toyota just make the cap door lockable?
because they saved money it's plain and simple same applies to the cheap plastic bumper's too.. seem's when toyota changed the front end and bumpers they did away with the lockable cap door like the 00 to 02 tundra presently have guess they figured the first badge need's it first
personaly I would like to see on the all new 07 tundra a cable release for the the gas cap door

The real reason the Tundra no longer has a locking gas door is so many owners complained to Toyota about the lock freezing in the northern states AND the others complaining about needing a key to get gas made Toyota decide to do away with the locking door. It had nothing to do about "being cheap".

I agree. I seem to remember back in 2000 folks here on the board were complaining that the gas door locked but there wasn't a lock on the glove compartment. Can't make everyone happy. I would also like to see a cable release for the fuel filler door.

I can't think of any Truck that has a cable release. There may be one I don't know of. But I would think they wouldn't use a cable because the bed and the cab move independently and you could also just grab the cable and open the door if it ran on the outside B/W the cab and bed. That is why vehicles that do use a cable run inside and are 1 structural piece(A Car).
But I could be wrong ( It has been known to happen )

It can be done. If they can have pressure sensing valves on the tires they can make a stupid little door open from inside the cab without any problems. The real issue would be cost.

I was just saying my ideas of why it hasn't or may never happen.

I have an '82 RX7 (don't drive it much since I got the tundra) that has a rocker switch in the dash that operates a solenoid for the filler door. It also has a key lock in case the solenoid would fail for some reason. Works great. I don't know why Toyota couln't have had something like that.

Hey phil how do you like your 20's- Im thinking of putting some on my 05 DC ltd.4x4 after my revtek lift.
Yes the lack of a locking door or fuel cap IS one of my pet peeves about the Tundra also. They can put all the other frills on like tire pressure sensors but NO, NOT a locking fuel door. I had a locking door on my 1988 xtra cab 4x4 and I live in Manitoba and never had a problem opening the door. Now I am worried about some punk pouring a coke or something in my tank when I am parked at the lake fishing.
stant pt.#11506 which is for the '99 4.3L GMC Safari...

(ask for stant part # 11506) .... hasworked on my '04 access cab for 5300 miles (7months) with no problems. I called stant and they said that pt.#10509 is for the tundra,so I tried it and it wiggled right off! So they are screwed up. Other folks have used the stant 11506 with no trouble. (pep boys for $15 + tax). The people who have CEL'S is because the fuel filler tube was not completely flat where the cap screws on to.(defect from the factory) Keep in mind, I have an '04....not an '05, so a simple call to 1-800-GO-TOYOTA will determine if there is a new change on the fuel filler tube. hope this helps a little bit, at least.
