Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "tear in bed (2005 Tacoma)", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I found a tear in the front wall of my bed today. The tear is right where the mounting screw attaches to the bed. I only have 1016 mile and the thing is tearing whats it going to look like at 200k? I haven't even tied anything down other than an exrta set of wheels off my Tundra. I hope the dealership dosen't try to weasle there way out of this being covered by the warrenty.

Well... here's documented incident number 2. How did you have the wheels tied down in the bed? What about temperature extremes where you live?
I wonder if the characteristics of the SMC beds rely on variables of how they're made... I wonder if the humidity/temperature/(whatever) in the "SMC-Factory" has anything to do with their strength. I wonder this because if the SMC bed was generally that weak, there would be a lot more than a handful of cases.

You can see all the fibers, just like wood that has been bent to far. It would probably last longer if the SMC wasn't a 1/4 inch thick. What does Toyota have to say?
I would rule out impact, it seems as though the bed had been bent and it just cracked.
I would agree with that statement definitely. Also since this is a solid material I wouldn't exactly call it a "tear". That would be for a softer material that was somehow stressed in two directions at once. This one definitely looks like something hit it very hard or the front tie down was overstressed with a load that was too heavy.
