Even if this is true, I think the change would be for a new model year. There's no way Toyota would spend the money to replace our composite beds with steel ones. For better or worse, we're stuck with the composite beds.

I understand what you mean, and it makes sense, but a truck is a truck. Truck beds are made for hauling. You should be able to haul the maximum stated capacity without worrying about it. Peace of mind is priceless to me.

Also a good point about the UV discoloration. It's going to fade, I guarantee it. On the other hand, my LINE-X has faded, as does Rhino and every other spray in liner. If you want the bed of your truck to look nice, carpet it and put a camper shell over it. If you want to haul dirt, rocks, motorcycles, etc... you should be able to do that without second-guessing the strength of the bed.

Finally got to throw some stuff in the bed this weekend doing some yard work. We tossed about 6-700 lbs of white austin stone in the bed. No problems. I figured as heavy and rough as it was with it sliding all over back there it would for sure leave marks all over, but it washed clean and smooth again. I'd be okay with either bed. I have the same complaint about both, the floor being slick as heck. But a bedmat will fix that. My dads 2001 f250 has been Rhino lined and its faded horribly bad to the point it looks gray instead of black now. Ive been tempted to buy some of that roll over bed liner stuff just to add some color back to it. The Rhino lining has been durable though i'll give it that. I havent loaded the quad back there yet, I usually trailer it and throw my gear in the bed with the coolers and gas tanks.

Spray some Just Once (www.justonce.com) on that Rhino, it will partially restore the color.

Read the information about LINE-X Xtra in the Aftermarket section.

Thanks for the "heads-up" David!

Fact is, I doubt there are many us here, who would be "blind-sided" and "totally" surprised at this being "fact". However, I can say, that I would certainly give a BIG to Toyota, for doing something "NOW" before the issue does become a real problem for the company.

On a lighter note... looks like business is fixing to get a LOT better for you... !

Default wha?

Either, this is a rediculous concept alltogether, or this will be 1) a fix for broken ones only, and 2) a 2006 issue, so I can't see it.

The money to replace a whole be with a redesigned steel one? Someone quoted high three digits for the plastic (SMC) one, so I'd bet a thousand or more. Plus they'd eat it bad on the design process, making it retrofit well.

We keep comparing this to "the gasket problem". How much is a gasket again? And eating labor is easier than materials I'd think.

I just don't see it. Maybe I'll be wrong...

If Toyota issues a TSB or a Campaign (recall) regarding this issue, then as soon as the TSB or Campaign Notice are published it will be available to subscribing memebrs in the TSB Database

123, you keep bringing up line-x . Are you a dealer? Was the initial post more motivated by you wanted to change tacomas back to steel so you can retain there business? Just wondering.

I just don't see Toyota doing a recall. Way too much money. It would definately be a case by case basis.

I'm not sure if Toy will do this or not. As for the naysayers who claim its too costly Toyota did a head gasket recall on the 90-95.5 Truck and the early Tacomas for headgasket failure and they fixed em way out of warranty. Had my 92 SR5 redone at 120k no questions asked. So yes cost is an issue but having a bad reputation is more costly. They say that the average person tells a min. of 5 people about a bad experience. (look at how fast the SCM cracked bed travelled the internet) The same person will not tell anyone of a average or good experience. Why? Because a good experience meets our expectations we're satisfied and we move on its not worth mentioning.

There's two things you remember the things you love and what you hate. Everything else is just filler.

I hope Toy treats people right whatever they decide.

I agree, they did well on the gaskets. But again, what do you really think Toyota's cost was to replace a gasket. Not your cost, but theirs.

What do you think their cost will be to redesign a whole new bed, build them, and install them.

Not even in the same league I bet.

We'll see...

I agree its going to be quite a bit different than a head gasket, but we're talking about in the 10's of thousands of beds right now. The gasket issue was across 6 or 7 years of engines so I think that 7 years of product probably puts it a little closer to the bed problem in scale. Although retooling the factory and re-training employees will cost $$$. They will most likely (provided Toy considers it a problem or enough consumers do that it goes class action) change production for the next model year and then only replace the beds for people that have 'issues' and complain about it loudly. Just because they recall a bed doesn't mean that everybody will want a steel one. Plenty of soccer moms and light duty weekend warriors are never going to have a problem with the bed. And the bed probably falls under the 3 yr/36k warranty so it only has to last 3 years. Check you manual I'm just guessing here.

For all the guys and gals that are really worried about this you need to realize that depending your trucks use the SMC bed could be a non issue. Probably 50% of trucks never get used for more than hauling the dog or a garbage can. I see people all the time who 'need' a truck when just about anything with 4 wheels would accomplish the job they have for it.
