Default Tacoma Bedliner: New Information

I obtained some information today that I thought I would share with you. Considering the source, I feel comfortable enough to at least mention it here, but I do not know if it's true. Perhaps someone can do some "digging".

I heard that Toyota is going to stop using the composite bed. And, they are going to recall the current composite beds and replace them with steel beds.

No April Fools joke here. Again, if I did not think that there was a reasonable possibility of it being true, I would not bring it to the TS forum.

Also, see the Aftermarket section for info on a NEW LINE-X product!

I don't mind saying that I hope it's true. I'm tired of warning my crew to be careful with my bed when loading materials! I like sliding lumber into my trucks in a carefree manner.

If this is true, what would Toyota do for those who have added a Snuglid that mounts to the composite Bed Rails? Although I have yet to have a problem with my bed.

You can still have the rails with a steel bed.

Well that would be one less worry on my list! Now if they would only offer to have the new bed sprayed with Line X or Rhino liner that would even out the inconvenience of having the truck in the shop for a day.

All I have to do now is keep checking my driver's and passenger side floors for any water infiltration!

If this is true, I wonder when painting would take place? I hope they would pre-paint prior to your appointment, then install the inner bed.

Default Maybe not April Fool's Day joke ...

... but I can't imagine it is true. Can you imagine the bucks involved in such a recall? And you can count the reported problems with the current bed on the fingers of one hand. Sure sounds like an urban legend to me.

As much as I would love to see it happen that would be so much money and effort and pissed of people. U fig that every truck would need to be color matched to the new bed or the new bed to the truck so it blends. I really just don't see it happening

I'd say that a very small, but still significant from a PR standpoint, number of '05 owners see these newsgroups. Therefore there can be many more problems in the field than what have been reported on TS,TN,TTORA and edmunds. There are 34000+ '05 Tacomas in the field. It's safe to assume that there are more than 2 cracked beds out there. One could speculate based on the fact that there haven't been more than 300 respondants to an '05 Tacoma poll, that the number could be much higher.

They could just paint all the beds black or have them sprayed with liner. The current bed does not color match the truck anyways.

And xsacta is right. Just because we know of 2 cases online does not mean that is all there is out there. Not every tacoma owner is a memeber of these forums and even less then that post information regularly on the inter net.

I would say only 1% of tacoma owners post online.

I agree that I like the idea of going to a steel bed. I hope it is true. The cost would be minimal for toyota now as oppossed to 3 years from now. Black lined bed is a good idea.

I would also imagine that some owners are ok with the composite bed and rather have the less weight, because they dont put much back there, thus Toyota would not be replacing all of them. not sure how much weight though....30lbs?

If anybody knows someone please ask, because I just ordered one and am very curious about this.

The best thing about a warranty is not having to use it.

No way. Toyota would not keep cranking out composite beds if they were going to recall all of them. I can see a switch to something different for 2006 but any replacement of 2005 composite beds will certainly be only on a case by case basis.

I would be there in a heart beat. If the steel bed will offer me all of the conveniences of the present with out the clear and present danger of cracking, I WILL TAKE IT !!!
There is no substitute to the test of time. Steel rules for beds. I dont mind plastic/glass for all else. Heck, if you are afraid to load your motorcyle onto a bed, what good is it.
I hope Toyota decides to implement it. I imagine at some point it will become a major class action suit. It would win my support as as far as a company to stay loyal to if they do this.
Enough with nay sayers saying its a couple of folks who had this. HAVE YOU (seriously) LOADED UP YOUR TRUCK THE WAY TRUCKS ARE COMMONLY USED?)
Try it tomorrow and report back to TS.

Red face Ok, here's the contrarian position...

You want a "real" truck? Go buy a Tundra. Or a Dodge, Ford, or Chevy full size. From a Product Marketing persective, the Tacoma is for people that drive to work during the week and then load it up with a cooler, a tent, and some camping gear every few weekends during the summer. OK, maybe haul a few loads to the dump or pull a Boston Whaler to the ramp 15 miles away, then park it and enjoy the rest of the day.

Think about it from the perspective of a Toyota product manager - how do they differentiate their product lines? The composite bed seems like a really great idea to shave weight and create a unique advantage. I think that is the reason they took a chance with it.

Me, I'm waiting to see if it creates more real-life problems like solar-induced a
