Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "California question re: rear bumper", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have tried to find a reasonable answer to this question, and have even gone so far as to call the local CHP office and ask. But even they could not give me what I felt was a straight answer.
When I bought my tundra, the rear bumper had been tweeked from backing into something. Today I removed it and mounted the license plate to the cross beam under the bed. I also went so far as to mount the licens plate lights to the beam so that they directly shine onto the licens plate (as close to original as I could see making it)
I was told by my neighbor that this was illegal and that the first cop that saw me would let me have it.
The CHP states that modification to a bumper which requires elimination of the license plate and lights is illegal, but all other removals are fine.
DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS?
Thanks...
Sounds perfectly legal to me. I have a rollpan, which is technically not a bumper, and a license plate mounted in the center with a small light illuminating it from above. My setup is perfectly legal and I've never been questioned for it. What you have is essentially what I have minus a big flat piece of steel around it. You should be fine... but don't take my word for it... just in case...

As long as its lit, its legit (wow that rhymed). My buddy did get pulled over for having a license plate bulb burned out, but I think there was more to that story than he led on to
Thanks guys... I just wanted to be sure, and when I couldnt even get a straight answer from the CHP, I figured I would try here...
In sure if they want to pull me over, they will find a reason... I just like to give them as few as possible!
With my wrap around bumper, I've had my license plate behind the head rest of the rear seat showing through the window. I've had city pd and chp behind me without any problems. I then placed it into the integrated hitch in the rear bumper. I have no lights mounted and again with local pd and CHP behind with no problems.
