Default Chipped Paint!

Those of you with chipped paint...does your paint look anything like mine? The first image is smack dab in the middle of the hood and is an area of about 1 square foot, the other image is of the passenger side headlight. This is rediculous! I only have 20K miles on my 2000. Toyota really needs to take responsibility for this. Their paint sucks to say the least. I have never had my truck offroad. It is driven about 5 miles one way to work and home daily. There is just no need for this kind of damage to the paint. Has anyone heard anything or talked to anyone that suggests that maybe Toyota is thinking about taking responsibility for this? I think I'll pay a visit to my dealer. I've only bought four Toyotas from him in the past three years maybe he can help.

I remember the four and a half years I lived in Biloxi. I lived off of Jim Money road, down Pass Road about three miles from Gate 7 at Keesler AFB. My Supra was always getting dinged on Pass Road as well as Hwy 90. I imagine it's a lot different now with the dockside gambling and 15 years of change.

Good luck,

I've only driven near the beach maybe a dozen times since I've had the truck. Besides that, the paint has to be pretty darn thin in order to speckle like that don't ya think? Either way, I'm really upset. I've only had the truck for about a year and a half and paid 26K for it. I baby my baby. This should not have happened. Somethings got to be done!

I've had mine for a year and a half and it looks pretty much the same as yours, only I chose blue for the backgound color instead of red. It's quite pathetic actually. What I don't understand are the various spots on the hood, about 1" in diameter, that have 8 or so chips in them. I've got two of those spots right now.

I have to agree. the paint seems very thin on mine as well. It actually looks a lot like the impact damage I used to get on my Plymouth Duster in Idaho from the gravel, sand, and dirt roads (few are paved). My windshield and rocker panels were sandblasted by the time I left. Check your windshield for pits in bright sunlight. you might find it's getting chewed up too.

Yup! The infamous chipping Toyota paint! Really $ucks doesn’t it after you just paid $26+grand for the truck? Mine looks the same way in the front. The top of the hood isn’t as bad as your paint but its getting there. I have the Green color and have 31k miles; the truck is 18 months old. I took it to a Toyota dealer and complained and they basically said that Toyota doesn’t cover chipped paint from rocks in the Road. I asked him then why my friends Ford Expedition, which is 6 months older than mine and has more mileage than mine traveling the same roads has almost no chips at all? He just looked at me and said “huh”?

I like my truck as a whole and this truck is my first Toyota. There are some things that are really pissing me off though. I have a leaking exhaust manifold and Toyota wouldn’t acknowledge it. I have chipping paint because Toyota skimped on the paint and made it thinner than gold leaf. I’m on my second set of seatbelts and one of them is sticking again. I have ticking noises coming from underneath the truck and the technicians at the dealer tell me it’s my drill bits under the seat. The ticking noise has been there for 17 months and the drill bits have been there for a week. My belts squeaks off and on and Toyota won’t acknowledge it. My temperature controls stick open or closed when it’s cold out and it rained the day before. Sometimes I swear my axle gives off a whine that I don’t hear in any other truck I have driven. Intermittently I get a beeping sound from under the dash when I put the left signal on.

I have brought my truck to the dealer twice and both times they tell me there is nothing wrong with the truck. Sorry I had to let it all out. If I had known about the thin paint I might not have bought a Tundra. I went with Toyota because I was under the idea that they have a higher standard of quality than the other manufacturers. For the most part that’s true but just like the big three they have their drawbacks as well.

Wow, I thought I had it bad. Guess I should count my blessings. Sounds to me like you got a Friday truck. Sorry to hear you have had such a bad experience with yours. I wonder what can be done. It sounds like a lot of people are having the same type problems. Good luck with yours.

Me too. Imperial Jade Mica. Third Toyota truck and previous two had much less paint damage over much longer periods. In fact I noticed a rock chip on the right front corner just below the headlight. I went to the self serve car wash and as I sprayed the same area from a 2' distance saw the chip double in size. The paint around the chip may have been damaged as well prior but it seems very soft. I've gotten vey good with touch-up paint.

My hood is also speckled with white chip areas. I've had a bug deflector since purchase. Disappointing. Combined with a front rotor and pad replacment last week I have had more concerns in the first 18 months of ownership than my two previous trucks combined. Neither had a maintenance issue in 300,000+ miles (except for the V6 head gasket campaign). During that problem Toyota took my truck for a day and half, gave me a rental and took care of the problem well out of warranty (5 years and 60,000+ miles). My loyalty isn't gone but fading.

I am also having the paint chip off my Tundra. At around 6k miles i noticed a wierd spot underneithe the passenger door. My Thunder grey paint was gone. At first i thought i knocked it of on a trail, then i remembered i won't go where my friends go. I'll only wheel where it is wide and without rocks talller than half of my shin. My seatbelts squeeks too, but i havn't bothered to tell the dealer. I am happy with my truck except the quality of the paint, i love the color

Yep, the front of mine looks very similar to yours except mine only has 5K miles on it. My hood is not as bad, but I have had a hood protector since day one. I don't drive on gravel roads (even though I do live in Idaho TundRoss ) and have been so careful with the truck that it should not have a blemish on it. IMHO, there is no way that Toyota can justify paint this thin.

Oh, come now. Half of the fun of living in Idaho was bombing around on the gravel roads (until you hit a right angle turn at 25 mph with a 3 foot deep ditch on each side). I haven't even waxed my baby yet. I'm afraid of wearing the paint out. have to be careful with the buffer.

Wonder how much a body shop would charge to put a nice thick coat of clear on a brand new truck...

That's what I've got the Jeep for TundRoss.

Waxing is your best protection. (Unless you take dmtalon's suggestion and get the whole thing clear coated right out of the box.) Don't delay! And yes...DO be careful with the buffer!
