This is a discussion thread titled "Painting a White Tundra Black???", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I was thinking about painting my white Tundra black, for a few different reasons... First of all my paint is chipped to hell, and I have some parts that are going on that need to be painted anyway. A few questions for whoever knows anything about painting...
What are the main issues with painting a white truck black? Would it be easier and cheaper to just repaint it white?
About how much should this set me back?(Rough estimate)
I really do not know that much at all about painting, if anyone has any advice, knowledge, links etc. it would be greatly appreciated.
Also if anyone can recommend a good paint shop anywhere in Southern California that I can go talk to it would be appreciated as well... Thanks
Going from a light color to dark presents some issues, or even from one color to another. The first being, especially on a pickup truck, surface area. Think about what needs to be painted. The door jambs, under the hood, the inside of the bed. Changing colors is a major undertaking to do right, but it can be done. What if you just got a good durable single stage white?
If you like black, go for it. Personally I think dark colors show more dirt, and since I want to detail my truck as little as possible, I stay away from dark colors.

i just purchased a white 2005 d-cab tundra for the same reasons... i does show some dirt, but overall - there's less fade; shows less chips (i guess), scratches won't show too bad either... but after my first couple washes, i noticed that those little yellow dots (pollen or bug guts, whatever) did leave a yellow tint into the paint. so yeah, don't park under trees and try to get those suckers off of your front end asap.
Then the consensus seems to be that it is more trouble than it is worth. I really like the look of black trucks, but white looks good too. I don't want to mess with it if it will be that much of a PITA...
I really want to get rid of all of those chips in the front end though. This paint seems like it just flies off if the tiniest thing hits it. Bugs and rocks really do a number on the Toyota paint, and that is all of the Toyota vehicles my family has (2 Tundras, Highlander, Corolla). I realize that people said it was thin, but come on Toyota we need something a little better...

Personally I think it has to do more with the EPA than Toyota. I'll bet if you look at vehicles painted outside of the USA they would have better paint.
Black is the best color, hands down. Yeah it gets dirty but it just looks sooooo good.

Black looks the best when it's clean, but I live on a dirt road so, it would never look clean. In my opinion white Tundras look really good. If I were you I wouldn't repaint it. It would cost a ton!
