Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone reporting their 'paint issues'", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
In my on-going effort to research and decide what my next truck will be, I called two separate Toyota dealers yesterday. I spoke to their service department.
Both people I talked to were quite willing to answer my questions and seemed very helpful.
Dealer #1
Said that he's heard of NO paint issues at all. Not 1 of any kind. On the brake vibration issue, he said that the factory was adjusting the rear brakes too tight and this was causing the drums to heat up too much and warp. The've since fixed this and are not seeing any more warpage.
Dealer #2
The only paint related problem she has seen is on the Tacoma's. She said that there's a small gray strip on the tacoma bumpers that is gray regardless of the color of the car, that she's seen 3 come in peeling. This piece is not part of the regular paint. As far as brake warpage, she was unaware of any *problems*. She did say that there have been people replacing their pads at 15k miles or so. But in those cases she said that it was fairly obvious that it was driver error (brake riders).
So my question is, are you guys that are complaining about thin paint telling the dealer about it? I tell you know, if you don't b!t(h nothings going to get done for sure. I know I've read a few posts saying that people have tried getting stuff done through the dealer, but I've also read a lot of post that just say "my paint sux too". PLEASE, PLEASE for those of us that haven't bought their trucks yet, if you have problems, I urge you to let your dealer know. Toyota will not *fix* anything if only 1% of the trucks they sell have owners complain about paint problems. It takes numbers.

Sounds like it’s time for you to check with an honest dealership! (Sounds like these two are trying to sell you a truck!)

I plan on taking mine to the dealer soon. I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row first so I can go in with the facts. I have really good standing with my dealer. I have bought three vehicles from them in the past and I am thinking about getting a sequoia (does anyone know if the sequoia has the same paint issues?). This just might open their ears to what I have to say about the paint problem. I agree that everyone should at least report the problem to their dealer or regional manager. With the number of people on TS having this problem...just imagine the amount of people who own tundras and are not on this site who are having the same problem. It is definitly a factory flaw. No doubt in my mind!
I did and they said “sorry but the warranty doesn't cover rock chips from road debris”. I said then how come my friends older Ford Expedition with more miles that travels the same roads as I do doesn't have paint chipping like this? He replied "huh".
I gave up!
At least I got my dealer to finally agree to fix me leaking manifold, my brakes, and my ticking noise under my truck after going there three times.
I do agree!! I've driven over 1 M miles in various vehicles (not OTR trucks), and have never seen a more brittle paint. At least the primer sticks (no rust - yet) and the color's easy to match - Krylon needs to come out with a "touch up" number, though.
My wife's Nissan has a rock ding in the hood 3/8" deep - paint's not even cracked. Seems the bugs here in Arkansas will chip the Tun-duh's paint!
Hey, v8Toilet - which ticking noise did they fix? The valve train stuff, or the 1/2 engine RPM clunk that sounds like a worn out old mechanical fuel pump driving off the cam?
It starts, it runs, it embarasses me.... what a feeling.

Does anyone here know where the paint code number is located on the Tundra? I've looked under the hood and on the driver's side door jamb decal without success. I need to know the code # to repair some chipped paint on the hood and the front of the truck. Thanks in Advance

They fixed my exhaust manifold leak. The truck doesn't tick anymore on startup. They showed me the manifold and it was cracked right where the first runner is.
I don't have any other clucking or ticking noises now with my engine. The engine runs great!

I had an ARE lid installed and they took the paint # off the tag on the inside of the driver side door. Dont know which # it is.---Buzz
It's on the door jamb. Certification Regulation Label, located on the left front door "B" Pillar or door rear lower surface.
It's the first 3 alphanumerics at the bottom of the label.

Listening to all the talk about paint chips and problems leads me to the next obvious question, which is what have you done about it? I have little use for the plastic stone shields I see on a lot of cars and trucks. Has anyone tried the Xpel product? If so, how did the application go? Xpel

I have had Scotchcal on the front of mine since 2 weeks after I took delivery. Works great. Mine was a custom install by a detailer, not the xpel kit.

Glenn,
Where was the detailer located? I haven't found anyone around here that does this type of covering but you're not so far away I couldn't take a day to have it done if the detailer is good. Everyone around here wants to sell you a plastic bug shield. The Scotchcal is the same as the xpel because the xpel kit is made with the 3M product. How does the Scotchcal blend into the appearance? It appears to be almost invisible on the xpel site pictures, but I would expect that. -Shawn

Shawn - The detailer was from Hopkington, MA. He actually did the job at my home, took a few hours. He put the material on the leading 6" of my hood, on the fronts of the fenders around the headlights, all around the grill, top of bumper, leading edges of the flares (I have a Limited) and on the painted mirror covers.
On my Sunfire Red Tundra the scotchcal is almost invisible unless there is a wax buildup alng the edge of the material, or if you walk right up close to the truck and look at it. It has now been on about 20 months and does not show any signs of yellowing or discoloring.

Oops, might be a bit of a drive to VT. Guess I may have to try the Xpel solution. It sounds like I have essentially the same truck you do and the Xpel kits do hood, grill, mirrors and bumper. Looks like around $350 for all the pre-cut bits and pieces and then my labor to install them. The good news is Xpel rates the Tundra as a pretty easy installation and the instructions on the web site seem pretty clear. Glad to hear the product is working well for you. -Shawn
