Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "TACOMA:Chips?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Maybe its just me but 2 weeks after i bought my taco my windshield got a chip along with my hood. 3 days later the whole thing was cracked. During that time i look at my front bumper and there's all these chips. A week later the top of my car gets hit by something and it chips BAD. A month later the side front panel of my truck was hit by something HARD there's a deep gash along the panel along with the fender flare. I know when this happened and there was no freakin car in front or on the side of me. The closest car was ateast 5-6 car lengths away. Now i'm starting to see small chips on the bottom portions of the door where everyone seems to be getting sand blasted...
Is anyone esle getting chipped easily or is it just me and that damn 110 freeway?
Welcome to the club! The paint chipping problem has been the biggest topic on this and every other Tacoma message board. Just do a search for it. For reasons unknown, some people are getting their trucks repainted through their dealer under warranty, and some aren't getting anywhere with their dealers or with Toyota. There was even a report that Toyota bought back a truck because somebody have over 300 chips on it. Generally, the chipping is on the lower doors and rear fenders. It's a widespread problem. All colors are affected but the Speedway Blue seems to be the worst.
Received my first "chips" last month. One appeared on the front of the hood and one below the left rear side passenger door (lower rocker panel). That's the down side of living in the desert where rocks, sand and other road hazards are common. I realized that's part of risk when owning a new vehicle....you can only do so much to protect it from mother nature and those nasty shopping cart dings.
I have a couple chips on mine, just had it in to the dealer for the 5,000 mile service. Asked the warranty guy there about the chipping, said he had not heard about any problems. Course mine is the first Taco they have had back for service.....

The engineers are looking at mine this Wed. I have mostly small chips on my rear fender flares.
I think they will end up repainting and install a 3M strip on it.
if you have a TRD Taco, do you have the clear 3M protectant on the leading edge of your rear fender?? Why didn't they put it on for the XRunner!?
Rob
Yes I have the 3M protectant on the rear fender. Should have been standard on all!!!

My truck has the 3M protective on it and its an SR5. My truck is all chipped up with only 3500 miles on it...already called Toyota Customer Experience to complain and its going to the dealer for a look over shortly.

I have a arb........... hearing on June 3. We'll see what happens.
I've got to say I love my 05 Tundra DC, but the paint quality is kind of dissapointing. the durability of the paint on anything plastic is just awful. It takes absolutely nothing to chip the paint on the bumpers. Also, had the truck for one week and had to have the color-keyed running boards repainted due to the paint peeling off in business card sized pieces.
On my white truck, the chips look like crap with the black plastic showing through. I don't know if the dealer will cover this or not.
My 05 Tacoma built 12/04 had chips on drivers door and what looked like sandblasting in same area. The dealer repainted, took 5 days. This looked like a paint defect to me.
