No...when the tires are on the ramp, part of the weight on that axle is supported by the ground (where one end of the ramp is sitting) and the other part of the weight is supported by the tailgate (where the other end of the ramp is sitting). So, IN FACT, the tailgate will never see the full weight of the ATV.
When the front tires are on the tailgate and rear tires are on the ramp.... Then where is the ramp? Oh yeah, on the tailgate too. So the entire weight of the quad would, in fact, be on the tailgate.
I guess a small portion of the weight would be supported by the ground at the other end of the ramp, but it wouldn't be much.
I was thinking the same thing!

Man, what a bummer. A new truck that can't be used as a truck. Everyone's walking on eggshells over this new composite bed, and they shouldn't have to be. If more of these cases surface, Toyota will lose more than a few customers from word-of-mouth alone.
Also, the tailgate to weight issue:
HockeyFreak is correct. It's all statics. The only way a tailgate will support the entire load of the quad is if you stood the quad on it's nose and balanced it on the gate. Any other time, two of the the four wheels of the quad are resting somewhere besides the gate. The weights of the ramp and gas are insignificant when compared to the weight of the quad and rider.

Before I purchased my Tacoma, I have had 3 Ford Rangers. A 1997, 2000, and 2002. From when I was in highschool I have been anywhere between 286 lbs-310 lbs and a current 6'4". I could stand on the tailgate with it down, sit on it with someone else and it would not bend. Granted, it was a lot heavier than my Tacoma's tailgate and now I know why. It was built stronger with rienforements.
Toyota Motor Corporation should give us 05 owners a FREE Steel Bed and Reinforced Tailgate, along with new rear leaves so the truck can handle the added weight...

I agree with you. Maybe if enough people complain Toyota they will have to don't something about it. I will be going to the dealer sometime next week, so I will keep everyone posted on what they are going to do to fix my tailgate.

I'm in TOTAL agreement with you on that... ! Toyota certainly NEEDS to do something. I'll at least give Toyota a for having the "nads" to try this new technology in such an "all-or-nothing" fashion. But if it "ain't" working... .
DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS FOLKS... but, that's kinda' what I've been quietly hearing, in the rumor mill. We'll know for sure, by late summer as the new '06's start to hit the shelf.

I wonder how many of us 2k5 owners beds will crack under warranty and be replaced with the new steel ones?
i hope when my truck gets in, my tailgate won't have that problem getting in my z400.
I think you'll be all set. A friend of mine just got an 05 and hes been putting his raptor in and out of the bed with no problems so far. I just won't try it on my 600lb plus Grizzly.
This was pretty much the major issue when it came to me buying a new truck. I want a truck that can do truck things. If I want to put my ATV, Lawn Tractor, Snowmobile, etc. in the bed I shouldn't have to cross my fingers every time I do it. I ended up with a GMC.
I also have a 400 foreman atv ,I have put in and out 6 or 7 times with no problems.I did run into a guy who had the same exact truck and he put a diamond plate panel on the inside of his tail gate, looked like a good idea.Sad to have to do it but it certanly would beef it up .
People seem to get really worked up when they hear about someone having a problem with their truck. This is ONE isolated case out of how many Tacomas out on the road? I've had 3 people weighing 180-200 pounds each sitting on the tailgate of my truck multiple times, no problems whatsoever.
