Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "TACOMA:Hood scoop or not?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just took delivery of a silver Tacoma DC TRD offroad. I have a guy that wants to trade me my regular hood for his silver with hood scoop. What do you guys think? I will be scraping snow off of her all winter. I love the look but the snow thing might be a pain. Comments please...
I think the hood scoop on a truck is not practical (with a few exceptions):
I think it takes away from the look of the truck. Others will disAgree bitterly.
I think a truck should look like a truck not like a "turbo charged" car.
I think it makes the truck look like it is "reaching".
I think it it served a purpose "MAYBE"
I think it is RICE - like big wings and loud pipes on (SLOW) honda civics.
if the civic was fast and could make use of the wing - I am cool with
that otherwise to me it is a "LOOK AT ME THING".
Notice all the I(s) this is my opinion. Many will differ.
The look has grown on me and my 20 something family members thing it's cool.
Plus I stated in another post that you can see light through it, therefore air flows in which means better engine compartment cooling. I know that's a stretch but it sounds good.

The hood scoop is the best part of the truck. I love my TRD Sport Package with the hood scoop and wouldn't trade it for anything. The hood scoop really makes the truck look cool and people really like the look of it.

Its your truck though, do what you want to do.
Hey Phi Kai, are you in club "Wooglin"? Phi Kai as in Beta?

Just my .02 . . .
Rice would be if the Hood was just slapped on with double sticky tape. These scoops are molded into the hood itself so i wouldnt consider that rice at all. I think it gives it a more aggressive look.
When is a hood scoop every practical. its just something you want to make it look nicer..Hell soo many cars come with them now a days..the new rams do but they are rice..It looks like they are just double sticky taped to them..those Neon SRT-4 does and they have no function since they are front mount so that isnt helping the intercooler. Its just something to give a little more of a street look

The Xrunner is on of my exceptions . . . the truck has an overall appearance and it RUNS very well. So if I purchased an Xrunner I would want the hood on that.
The other day I thought I was "bad" cause I had race a few trucks. I came across a V-10 dodge truck with a small wing and hood scoop. That is another "exception". That is another "sport truck". I think a TRUCK should not have a hood scoop. A sport truck is another story.
I also think that not ALL civics are rice. I have seen a few bad boy civics that are worthy of a large wing and tach/gauge setup. But most civics are just a loud pipe and big wing with NO go. That is soooooo rice!!
Again, just my .02
BTW, what I mean by sport truck is a truck setup like a sports car . . . low to the ground and can handle very well and haul A$$.
Matter of opinion. Do you like the look or not? Not sure what you mean about scraping snow off being a pain, I got a crapload of snow this year (ie. I run Blizzaks in winter) wipe it off like any other vehicle. Heck, you can stuff the scoop with snow and create a more aerodynamic flow, hahahaa. I'll be the first to say I didn't want a hood scoop, but the Sport suited my needs better than the Off-road. So I got the fly catcher with it. Now that I've had it for 6 months, I dont mind it. 90% of people love it. For the nay sayers, I tell them a supercharger add-on is coming, which of course I'm not buying.
I heard that the hood scoop obstructed some of your vision..take it into consideration
I wondered about the obstruction issue before I got my TRD Sport, but now that I have driven it for a month it is hard to see how is gets in the way of seeing anything. It doesn't block any more of my view than the hood already does. I picked the Sport package because it fit my needs better than the Off Road, not for the hood scoop, but now that I have it I don't mind it. My informal poll - more people have said they like it, than not like it.
