Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Bumpers", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Has anyone noticed that the bumpers are not very substantial. They seem very tinny and seem like any little dent bends the bumper. Used to own a NIssan who's bumper you could not bend with a crowbar. I quess their just trying to keep the weight down. The rest of the truck is GREAT. Doen any one know if Toyota will ever build a short bed Tundra or offer a diesel engine as an option. The new step side in a short bed would be a nice looking vehicle. Does anyone know when the Tundra engine plant will be complete and when they expect production to start. Also does anyone know what displacement the engine will have and how much horsepower.
I think the bumper is made the way it is because of the crumble zone. Upon impact the bumper will crumble to absord a lot of the impact. This may be one of the many reasons the Tundra got a great score on the crash test.
On another note, if you are interested in taking your truck off-roading, I've planned a day trip to Davis Flats, just north of Sacramento. Check out the California forum for the Davis Flat off-roading trip for more info.
I have noticed that these bumpers are not very tough. I managed to dent mine for the first time last week when backing into an electric transformer box that stopped my truck before the tires hit the curb. I figured there wouldn't be any damage since I was going maybe 1 or 2 mph. After all I was backing up, but when I looked at the bumper it has a nice dimple and dent that is in the ridge just below the plastic cap. I was PISSED!
Now I am wondering if anyone makes heavy duty aftermarket bumpers for the front or rear similar the new ARB winch bumper, but not quite that military strength.
If anyone knows of such a beast feel free to share...
