This is a discussion thread titled "Form-Fit Bug Shield", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have been getting 3 paint chips on the front end of my 05 Phantom Gray Tundra. I think that I might want to get the form fit bug shield. However, one dealer has told me that some bug shields when installed will erode the paint off the hood themselves. Thus, in a way, it sort of defeats the purpose of getting the bug shield. Any info or comments on how the bug shield installs? Thanks

They had 2 bug shields at the Toyota dealership. 1 was an OEM bug shield and the form fitting bug shield was referred to a "port install" by the parts department and was actually 40 bucks cheaper.
The port install bug shield requires you to remove the front grill by way of 6 nuts. You then place a foam gasket around the lip of the hood where the grill fits. You install 6 clear rubber tits onto the hood (they have a glue on the base which secures them to the hood). The bug shield fits over the foam gasket and rubber tits and it held in place by 2 end clips, one on each side. You then reinstall the grill and your are done. It should never touch the paint if its done correctly and it can be done in minimal time.
I have the form fit bug shield on my truck. I have had no issues with the the bug shield. Many people have had the bug shield break during car washes. I have been through many car washes and have had no incident as of yet. The bug shield does not touch the paint at all and it looks good.

THanks all. HOw does the formfit install? Is it the same way as the OEM?

I've got the formfit and have have it on my truck since may of '03 with no issues...until now, that is.
One of the little black clips is just gone. So the deflector is fluttering as I drive down the road making an awful racket and I'm really worried that it's going to gouge the paint. Any ideas where to get some replacement clips? I've rigged up a piece of fuel line with some electrical tape in the meantime...looks like sh_t though.
I've tried calling the dealer I bought it from (Carson Toyota) but haven't managed to get ahold of Gordon or Louis other than their voicemails so far...
A google search only brings up articles and places that sell the deflector but haven't managed to turn up the manufacturers site...www.formfit.com brings up ladies underpants!! (uh oh, did I give you pervs something to look at??)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only additions: Waterproof seat covers, Westin nerf bars, Colgan sport bra
REMOVED: Formfit hood deflector. Loved the look but a clip went missing. Can't find one for sale without the $45 hardware kit!
Mods: 12V outlet relay "fix" to have power when ignition switch is off.
Gripes: Weak leaf springs that Toyota doesn't want to warranty, paper-thin paint, interference design motor, crappy rear mud guards that cost $78 each (local dealer wanted $100) and only last 25k miles. Front mudguards built differently! (better)
I noticed my form fit bug shield was cracked from a rock say a month or two ago. With in the last two weeks i noticed that the crack had spread. I was out sighting in rifles today and wallked around the front of my truck, and there it was, half hanging off the front of my ride. Kinda of unimpressed when i went to take the rest of it off, two meesely clips and the center being pinched in between the grill and the hood. Although i AM A COMPLETE SUCKER, I love the look compareds to the others on the market and you dont see a whole lot of them around. Goin back for more punishment, we will see how this one goes.

Dam that thing must be cheap or it was a big rock.
I took the FormFit off for good. It's not broken, but without a clip, it flutters like a broken bird wing and the ONLY place that even was willing to get me a clip (after, no kidding, 58 calls!) quoted me a price of $69!!!!!!
So I decided to try one of the Colgan bras, and for $57 delivered (from performance products), it looks as good (if not better), no clips to deal with, has the added plus of having a screen over the grill keeping out the giant dragon flies and other critters that have ended up dinging the fins of my condensor and tranny cooler. Wish I had this bra from Day 1. I'll update with a photo soon. I think it's an improved look and it protects the hood just as well if not better than the FormFit. The only draw back I can see is that you are supposed to remove it to wash the truck and to let it dry if it gets wet...yeah, I don't care for this either but it literally comes of and back on in less than a minute, so it's only a minor annoyance. I keep her in the garage so it's not going to be much of an issue for me anyhow.
I've got the formfit up on the wall and will either sell it on ebay or save it just in case a clip shows up...

I dont know if this will help you, but I had just had this 3M clear bra installed on mine and I love it. Bugs wont penetrate it and we even tried to poke our keys thru a spare piece and couldnt do it. Installer was a real pro and unless the sun is at the right angle, you literally cant see it.
My last truck was a mess with rock chips and love bugs (nasty little critters here in Florida) that have acid for blood, and ate my hood up. So far bugs just wipe right off and you can even wax it. Best part for me......its nearly invisible.
