Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Bed Cap Removal", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
For those of you who removed those bed caps off the sides of your bed what exactly is underneath there. Is it just the 2 stake pockets and the cap is held on with 2 sided tape.
When I bought my bedrails i told the guy i was going to remove them and put the rails. He said don't do it because there were all kinds of holes underneath so i just put the bedrails ontop of the caps. I now think i would like to remove them but not if it will leave holes. If it is 2 sided tape i should be able to clean it up pretty easy and then remount the rails. Thanks.
OK thanks for that info. I think I will leave well enough alone. Looks good anyway. Just never liked the looked of over rail things like that but my truck is silver and the caps are gray so it looks fine. I will leave it alone. Thanks again.
there are two stake pockets and three small holes. my bed came line-xed with the three smaller holes covered, but if i had a choice i'd have kept the holes, they're useful...just look under the lip on the inside of the bed, youll see where they are.
I thought that none of the 2000s came with bed rail caps on them but, that changed for 2001, 2002. The '01s & '02s that come with the bed rail caps have several other holes that tabs on the bottom of the bed rail caps snap into.

I took the rail caps off my 2002 to put a topper on. There are a lot of holes. Some one definitely went crazy with the holes. The good news is you can pull the rail caps off and put them back on easily.
I've had the caps off my '01 for a few months now, although there are lots of holes, it doesn't look bad. Better than with them on, IMO.
If you ever plan on taking them off, you'd be best advised to remove them as soon as possible, as they do a very good job of removing the paint around the edge of where they cover.
At least that's what the Roll-n-Lock instructions advised. I got this cover before they included spacers to put between the cap and the body. Seems that the clamps tend to crush the bed caps down and make it look and perform bad.
Anyway, got a retro-fit kit from them and they suggested pushing the tabs from inside the bed to minimize those tabs from snappin' off. I haven't seen this noted as a problem from anyone, but it seems to make sense as a precaution.
