My Tundra's DrawTite receiver with six frame bolts is rated at 5000# for weight carrying (I'd never tow that much that way) and 8000# with a weight distributing hitch (exceeding the Tundra's capacity). Both DrawTite & Reese are brands of Metaldyne Corp. http://www.metaldyne.com/Tow.html Your Reese receiver really should have a capacity label on it. If the receiver is rated at 5000#, it's Class III. If it's rated higher with weight distributing, it's Class IV. What is the virtue of the two additional bolts into the bumper? The bumper is bolted to the frame anyway.

My Factory Toyota is rated as a class IV hitch as is. That's correct the bumper is bolted to the frame, which is the last cross member. The additional bolts tie the hitch to the last crossmember along with the lateral frame rails giving you a stronger application.

I got under the truck last night with a flashlight and did find a label on the hitch. It says the hitch is rated at 5000lb for V6 and 7200lb for V8 so they are just going by the truck ratings. The included drawbar says its rated for 6000lb so not sure whats up with that. Date of manufacture is Jan 31,2002 so I am guessing this is a new model (Reese 38555) and thats why they have zero info about it on their site. Reese still has not replied to my request for info on the hitch as of this time. As far as the liner goes, I got an email that gave me a great idea and its basicaly the same thing my dad got in 1985. Get the line-x and have them put the toyota drop-in back in afterwords. Anyone see a problem with this?
Thanks, Fletch
Fletch,
The truck and the receiver are only rated at 5000# tow weight and 500# tongue weight without a weight distributing hitch, so the 6k# drawbar is more than enough. The label you saw on the receiver probably referred to spec V-5, not a V6 engine. V-5 is a Federal hitch specification.

Agreed, the V6 is rated to tow 4900# to 5250# depending on cab size (weight, really) and transmission type. Anyway, the sticker on the receiver doesn't relate to the engine, just to weight carrying or weight distributing capacities.

If you are getting Line-X, why bother with the crappy drop-in? Line-X will look way better, and things won't slide around as much. Ever put a 5-gallon bucket in a bed with a plastic liner? You hear it bang every time you start or stop!
IMNSHO (In My Not So Humble Opinion), you really ought to secure your load so it doesn't slide around, no matter what bedliner you have. I've cut a piece of stretchy nylon rope a little longer than enough to go from the right rear cargo tie-down to the front right, front left and rear left. I leave it tied there all the time. A single item slips under the rope. If I need to tie down more than that, the rope is right there.
