This is a discussion thread titled "LINE-X Xtra - Final Update", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
That comment reminded me of something the Dupont rep told us: There was a LINE-X dealer at one of the training classes that said that he would never be able to sell Xtra because he lives way out in the country and his customers were all farmers, etc. Here's the funny part: This particular LINE-X dealer was the very first dealer in the entire country to place a REORDER for Xtra.
Make sure that "top coat" is Xtra and not Ultra Shield or Nason. The best is Xtra, then Nason, then Ultra Shield.
If you get it done, post some pics. We're in the process of setting up the Xtra equipment. I already have a truck waiting (Tundra). I'll take some pics when I can.
Would appreciate a PM regarding the extra cost for the Xtra so I know what i'm getting into. Dealer here is a little pricy on the line-x.

Whats the main difference between these top coats?

Good: Ultra Shield - Top coat, keeps the liner from fading. However, it has a semi-gloss shine that is more dull than just LINE-X. Black only. I don't like it and I don't sell it.
Better: Dupont Nason paint - Top coat, more durable than Ultra Shield. Nason is a urethane based automotive paint so it won't fade. It actually bonds to the LINE-X product. It's glossy, available in black or any color you want, including factory color code matching. Nason takes about 4 hours to become tack free. Some of the LINE-X final texture is lost with Nason. I like it and I sell it. Not recommended for commercial vehicles.
Best: Xtra (made by Dupont only for LINE-X bedliners) - LINE-X and Dupont spent a year formulating this product. Contains Dupont Kevlar, contains more solids (less VOC's) than the Nason mentioned above. No fading, more durable, more stain resistant, more scratch resistant. Appied like a top coat but actually migrates into the bedliner. Black is available now, colors will be available around November. Becomes tack free in about 15 minutes. If applied correctly, very little LINE-X texture is lost. I like it and I sell it.
Our first truck with Xtra looked OK, I found out the pressure was too low on the spray gun. Next time I think it will be a lot better. The Dupont rep told us that it takes 3 or 4 trucks before you get the hang of it. A Toyota dealer has expressed their interest, we are ready to go whenever they pull the trigger. When they do, I'll snap some pics.
Thanks for the info. I will call my local Line-X dealer and see which one they use.

RE the Nason coating, I'm wondering what its longevity is. Three questions:
1. Does it get scratched up looking like if you drag a piece of furniture or a load of rocks on it? My local dealer doesn't have the Xtra and it doesn't sound like he's going to have it anytime in the near future.
2. if the Nason is applied now and the dealer gets the Xtra down the road can the Xtra be applied over the Nason?
3. Having the truck done tomorrow. If I don't get the Nason or any other coating now, can the Xtra be applied say 6 months from now and still do its magic?

Had the line-x put on today. I have to say it looks great. I didn't think I was going to like a black bed with my white truck but WOW. I didn't get the topcoat done since they don't do the Xtra yet. I'm putting on a Retrax in a week or so so I'm not worried about fading for now. Got a good deal too. Paid $411 out the door. They even picked up the truck at my office and brought it back to me a few hours later. Great guys, great service, great price. I used Line-X of Henderson (Las Vegas). Tim was very easy to work with and he answered all of my questions. I recommend them without reservation.
Did you do an over the rail or under the rail? Did you leave your rail caps on?
