Default I need help finding under rail tool box/chest.

I've looked everywhere I can think of and at many brands, but I just can't find a under rail tool box/chest thats a good fit. I would like a tool box/chest that fits up against the cab end of the bed, but will still open without the box lid pressing against the bed. I want the box to be under the rail so the short height is important. I also want room to store long items so length must be between 50" to 60"

The problem I'm having is that most tool box/chest are too tall for the Tundra's shallow bed or the tool box lid sits over the box like a cap and when open, the lid needs a couple of inches to hinge back and therefore the box can't set up against the bed wall. The truck chest design would be ideal except the ones I've found are too tall.

I already looked at BetterBuilt, Contico, UWS, Delta, ... HELP!

Rowdy,

I've been perfectly happy with the BetterBuilt they make for the Tundra. It fits over the bedrails to be sure, but is off the bed so I can slide 8 foot long sheets under it. By moving it forward so the lid opens easily, I can reach the cargo hooks in the stake pockets, and even the ones down below.

Even though it's above the bed, it doesn't foul up my vision to the rear. I can still see the top of the tailgate with the tool box installed.

For me, the only reason to get a box that fits within the bed is if you want to use a bed cover -- but you say you want a tool box up near the cab. If you find one, you'll then have to take the cover clear off to open the tool box.

Guess my real question is: Why do you want a tool box that fits inside the bed?

I liked the BetterBuilt truck chest design especially the lid, but its too tall for me and does block a little bit of my rear view. I guess I was just spoiled with the good visablity of my old small truck and don't like depending totaly on my mirrors to see behind me when backing up and changing lanes. I don't like the above rail looks either and if I must settle for that I may as well get a above the rail box. I did see the low profile above the rail box and may go with that if I have to.

Also my 2002 cab side bed rail bends back 2" toward the tail at 13" above the bed floor so that anything taller than that won't sit flush against the wall. That 2" x 13" x 50" of space left behind the box/chest and the bed wall could collect a lot of unwanted trash.

If someone made a truck chest like the BetterBuilt, but only a few inches shorter it would be ideal. I'm just hoping they do and someone here can point me to them. Yes I'm very picky, but if I wasn't I would be driving an F-150 and not a Tundra.

I'm in the same boat as you. I too want a flush mount box, but it appears as though nobody makes one to fit the Tundra dimensions. I'm considering buying the one Home Depot has and having a weld shop cut three inches off the bottom of it. If one of the major tool box manufacturer (like weatherguard) would just make one, they could make a killing on them with Tundra owners...

Don't go to the shop, I found one that's low profile and fits fairly well. I will have to get back to you on the brand name, contact numbers, and dimentions.

The truck "chest" I found is diamond tred 36" wide and butts up againt the cab side of the truck bed. It's low enough to fit under that lip and not stick up over the sides of the bed. It fits well, but I wanted something a little wider. For now it works and I have it centered so there is enough room on each side to stick a small cooler, gas can, or other items beside it and still get to the tie downs. I think there is now a wider version and if I can get it in black to match my liner, I will replace the current one.

Anyway the brand is RDS out of Perry, FL 850-584-6898. I got it from a local detail shop.
