This is a discussion thread titled "BedRug Installation", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Decided to go with the BedRug over Line-X for my tundra dc, so I ordered it from truckcandy.com yesterday. I also ordered a Leer fiberglass tonneau cover yesterday, so I'm hoping the two compliment each other. I'm alittle concerned about installing the BedRug, as I'll want it perfect and don't have alot of patience for any screw ups I'll do. So if there is any tips on how to install this product that'll ease the installation procedure, I'd greatly appreciate it. I briefly looked at some of the instructions for it, and from what I gather is that there is a bunch of velcro that needs attached to the bed, is the other velco pre-attached to the liner? Also, the grooves on the bottom of the bed should line up with the liner, right?
Oh yeah, with the tonneau cover, should the plastic bed rails be removed? Will they effect the water tightness any if left on or will they look stupid left on?
I installed a bedrug on my double cab, so perhaps I can help, a little. You will want to leave the bed-rail caps on. If you remove them, there are about 30 holes underneath, and it doesn't look right.
As for the bedrug, yes it's a lot of velcro! It is not pre-attached to the liner, but the liner is marked in an easy-to-spot as to where the velcro needs to go. The instructions wern't very good, because they're universal. If you look at the liner, you'll see exactly where the velcro needs to go. I gave the bed a good wash with soap and water, and two rinses. Then I cleaned the areas where velcro would go with acetone. Worked very well.
I have three tips:
1) Zip the liner together, and let it sit on the ground for a while (in the sun) to let it flatten out from being stuck in the shipping box.
2) Clean your bed thoroughly! Only the adhesive from the velcro keeps the liner in the bed. Make sure it is attached securely and properly!
3) Take your time! Total installation was about 1 hour for me, and I was very patient. Definitely worth the extra effort.
Overall, the bedrug is 99% satisfactory to me. It is definitely not as strong as LineX, as I have stretched "hairs" from the carpet moving some large, heavy items. It is also slightly annoying after a rain because it is soaking wet. However, it holds in VERY well, and is overall an excellent fit. I've also heard many positive comments from people. If you're going to be using a hard tonneau cover, you probably will not run into the "heavy object" issue that I had.
I do not regret buying it, and I think you will enjoy yours very much.
Yes, the other velcro is already attached (guess I was lucky). This is some of the strongest velcro I have ever seen. Yes, the grooves line up.
Don't know about the bed rails and water tightness, but you may want to consider getting a tailgate seal. I have a shell on my tundra and whenever it rained and I was parked facing downhill, I would always end up w/ wet carpet. I know the bedrug doesn't mold or mildew, but when I climbed into the bed I would wind up w/ wet knees. The tailgate seal stopped that problem.

Hey KKirk, I have the exact same combo that you ordered on my 2005 DC. I bought the Tonneau from a camper yard and they installed the bed-rug for free. I think the combo works very well. The bed of the truck looks like a very large trunk. It's nice enough and comfortable enough in there to take a nap, which I've done
I think the Leer is the best fiberglass tonneau I've seen. I like the fact that the latch mechanism is on the edge of the cover and not on the top ... these trucks are pretty tall. The underside of the tonneau looks just like the bedrug so they really complement eachother. I also had the latch hooked up to the locking mechanism on the passenger door of the cab so the remote unlocks the lid as well. Very slick.
You will be happy with the combo.
