This is a discussion thread titled "Form Fit Bugshield Question", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I was wondering how exactly does the Form Fit Bugshield attatch to the truck. I hope it doesn't have any of those metal clips that attach to the leading edge of the hood. It is a few bucks less than the Toyota shield, but which one is the best for protection? If money wasn't a question, what one would you get, a Form Fit or the OEM Toyota shield
The deflector is mainly held between the grille and the edge of the hood along with a pair of plastic clips. To install, you just have to remove the 5 bolts that hold in your grill. After which you have to apply a foam gasket around the edge of the hood where the grill was. This prevents direct contact between the deflector and hood. From there it is just like other deflectors where you attach rubber bumpers and plastic "E" clips which keep the edges from flapping around. It took me less than 10 min to put it on.
I chose the form fit because it was cheaper ($80?), plus the FF covered the areas between the grille and headlights which was a plus for me since that area was getting pounded by rock chips. From what ive read, both the Toyota and FF are fine choices.

ra1nman, is the E clip you mentioned attach to the front edge of the hood and then the shield, I have seen quite a few older vehicles that clip has rubbed through the paint and that wont be a solution, I looked at a hood protector at Performance (they took it out of the box) and the clip was metal and the only thing that protected the clip from the metal edge of the hood was a small piece of plastic tape. Talk about a rust solution
5 speed, like you menitoned, the clip attaches to the leading edge of the hood along with a tape like materal. I have had the FF for over a year now and removed it several times with no signs of wear. I guess since the clips are plastic and not metal they're not as harsh on the "tape" as metal would be?
ra1nman, have you seen how the Toyota attaches? Which one would you go with, I am a little bit hesitant with the clips, I don't have a problem with drilling under the hood, just on the edge bothers me.
I'd say get the Toyota if you don't mind the drilling part. I think I remember reading that you don’t see the drill holes on top of the hood it's all done underneath......maybe someone can chime in and shed some light
