Default Leaking sun roof

Any one have a leaking sun roof???

Seems like the weather stripping around it has shrunk just enough to allow water to enter around it. There is a trouth under it that runs around both sides and the front with drain holes to relieve some water but nothing under the rear of it. My truck has smelled like a wet dog for some time now but I don't own a dog. This sucks. Anyone ever replace the weather stripping???

i had a similar problem w/ my celica. what i did was to blow pressurized air through the drain holes. i used a rubber piece on the end to make a good seal on the drain hole. hope this helps........sg777

All sunroofs leak (even new). In fact they are even "designed" to leak. That is where the water management system comes in play. If it is plugged and fills up too much you will have trouble. This problem gets worse if you park on a hill and it ends up draining out onto the headliner (perhaps you are parked nose uphill and the water will drain out the back of the trough and not down the drain tubes). Make sure the drain tube is not plugged all the hoses are on tight. You might want to make sure your headliner isn't moldy.

If the gap between your seal and the roof is extremely large water might be overwhelming the water management. Can you provide a picture? I'm guessing you have a plugged tube or something though.

There are 4 drain tubes on your sunroof.(2002 4 runner) Blowing air thru them should help clear them out. Dont blow to hard or you will dislodge the tubes.

Thanks for the responses.

It was a drain tube problem. Passenger front ran down trough the dash where Toyota pinched it between the heater housing and the sheet metal body of the truck. This thing could never have drained from day one. To bad I'm out of warranty and had to remove half the dash and heater to fix it.

Thanks again for the help. This site and it's readers are awesome!

I have a 2006 4runner and yes the sunroof leaks and my brand new car smells like a wet dog. (I don't have a dog either.)
I took the car back to the dealership and they claimed it was fixed, but it still leaks. I'll need to take it back again.

Lightbulb Re: Leaking sun roof

I noticed the sunroof on my '04 runner leaking quite a bit during a rainstorm last week - at least I can use it to explain the wet dog smell (though I do frequently carry wet dogs as well ). I found that if I use the tilt feature to slightly open and then re-close the sunroof, it does manage to seal properly.

I've heard way too many horror stories of dealers trying unsuccessfully to fix sunroof leaks so I've resolved to just live with it, so long as the tilt "cheat" continues to work.

your sunroof may have inadvertantly become "OUT OF TIME".

Try resetting it with these instructions and see what happens.
