Default Consumer Reports rates best car wax

In the July 2006 edition of Consumer Reports several different car (or truck) waxes were tested. In the Liquid wax category BLACK MAGIC Wet Shine Liquid Wax ($7 a bottle) was rated the best along with TURTLE WAX Carnauba Car Wax ($7 a bottle).

What was interesting is that these readily available (i.e. local auto parts store or Wally world) waxes outperformed much more expensive waxes like Zymol (what I use) and Griot's Garage (what some TS'ers sware by). I have posted a scan of the rankings at: http://www.geocities.com/sawyerkt/wax.jpg

I Dare Black Magic and Turtle wax to compare to any Poorboys/Clearkote/Zaino/Klasse/Jeffs Werkstatt stuff anyday.

NUFINISH was rated on up in rankings to wasent it? I wouuld never use that stuff on my vehicle.

You might be surprised. Most of the boutique waxes that you mentioned (and which I also use) depend on a properly prepped service to really look good (i.e. polish, clay, or both). Klasse AIO would be an exception, of course. My guess is that these guys just washed their car and applied some waxes, in which case an OTC wax with a lot of cleaning ability and some fillers may outperform a true carnuba like Natty's, or a pure sealant like EX-P.

I haven't read the article but I don't put a whole lot of faith in CR.

Well you are right, I am sure that turtle wax hard shell wax would look good over some Mezerna FPII or Clearkote RMG. Prep is the key to a good finish.

Prep is the step before wax. Usually involves buffing with a polish(FPII, Mezerna Final Polish II), and then a glaze to deepen color (clearkote Red Moose Glaze).

Prep makes the difference from a "average" waxed truck, to a truck with no swirls, waterspots, scratches, and a fantastic deep wet color.
