Question Bike rack question

Anyone with a bike rack have any preferences? I basically want to know if anyone prefers a fork mount or wheel mount, and why.

Oh yeah, I'm going to mount it to the roof rack that is on my shell.

Thanks

Thanks! I think I'm going to go with the Yakima Viper rack.

Thought about the hitch mount, but then I would have to buy a hitch. Don't need a hitch since I don't tow anything. I also had my bike nearly fall off a hitch mount once (my bike has a weird frame and wouldn't fit right) it was dangling by the locking cable.

I've had thule for fifteen years, still have the same rack. Never had a problem, fork mount is more solid. Takes about the same time to put the bike on.

I mount both of my bikes like a moto-x bike in the bed. I'm running a 20mm thru axle in the front. So, it would be a pain to remove the front wheel when mounting it. On my other bike I have a quick release and used the fork mounted set-up by thule when I had my car roof rack.

Definitely the fork mount. I've raced mountain bikes since 1993 and have seen a number of bikes that have actually fallen onto the sides of cars; smashing windshields, causing dents, and damaging paint. You can't trust a tire mount in the wind. Try crossing the Mackinaw Bridge with a 60 mile an hour cross wind with your bike mounted on a tire mount rack and you'll soon see your $2000 chuck of aluminum do a 200 foot swan dive into the Straits of Mackinac. Also, stick with Thule. They hold up much better and have a tendency to fit better than Yakima.

Okay, forkmount it is. Don't want my bike to fly off and land somewhere in Michigan.
You answered my next question. Which company do you prefer, Yakima or Thule? I'll have to check out Thule's website. Anyone else have a preference?

Thanks

I have a Yakima rack on the cab of my 2002 SR5 V8. It has the Q towers that clip on under the doors. It looks awesome with the new fairing that they just put out and it is very sturdy. BUT, there is a rattle that I cannot do anything about, no matter how I position the Q towers or how much padding I put on the clips. It is driving me *%$!@! CRAZY!

On my rack I once loaded 10 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood and 25 2x8x10 studs, the thule never moved, the car looked like a low rider but the rack was fine. I've never had a yakama, so I can't say anything about them, if you get the thule spend the money and get the wind deflector. The rack on my wife's 98 pathfinder makes a good deal of wind noise. It is mounted on the factory roof tracks. I didn't have a problem with the old rain gutter style mounts. You could go either way on you're shell.

Ooops. I wasn't clear. I meant does anyone have a preference between the Yakima or Thule bike rack. I already have the Yakima towers and bars mounted on the shell.

Thanks anyway.

I don't think you can mount the thule bike rack on the yakama bars, not without some modification. If you allready have the yakama bars go with the yakama bike rack, it will make your life a little easyer.
