This is a discussion thread titled "Rear window latch broken", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Well this weekend I was driving around with all of my windows down and my back sliding window open. When I parked I obviously close all of my windows and when I reached back to my rear window and grabbed it by the handle to shut it, the latch just came right off of the sliding window!
There are two circular rubber peices that was mounted between the glass and the handle and the peices came right off of the handle (so the two rubber pieces are still on the glass). All I had was super glue at the time so I attempted to reattach the handle. I let it cure for 24 hours and as soon as I tried to open it the handle came right back off. What would be the best thing to use to get that darn handle mounted back onto the window?
The TSB does not cover the rear sliding window only the quarter windows. If you are still in warranty they should fix it though.

Well one of mine broke today. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the other one breaks too. I'll have to go get the TSB fix for it sometime soon.
Just thought ya'll would like to know that you're not the only ones.....
Like many of you I had both my original latches replaced under warranty despite the fact that I rarely opened those windows, becase the cheap plastic link cracked, and the replacement links started cracking in the same place a year later.
I am very disappointed to learn that they haven't improved the parts, and that they only sell them as part of a very expensive latch assemble. Shame on Toyota.
Not about to spend the money for new ones, I got some small pieces of aluminum and made a pair of replacement ones that should never break. I used the broken ones as a guide and used a die grinder with a carbide bit to do the final shaping. They look and work just like the original ones, and only look different becase I left them bright aluminum instead of painting them black.
Final cost to me, about 1/2 hour of my time, and $0.50 cents worth of aluminum.

You should start manufacturing and selling them. I don't have my '00 access cab any more, but broke both on it. If I remember correctly, they were $25 or $30 apiece to replace.
