Question gas damage paint??

Should I be worried that a gas spill could damage my paint?

I went to a CHEVRON gas station by Lawrence and El Camino or somewhere like that. And I stopped on pump #4 (87). I let the pump do it's thing and when it automatically shut off, it's time to close the lid and off I go. Well, just when I thought I was done fueling up, the damn pump just exploded... well, leaked a gas on the side of my truck. I think it was about maybe a half-cup to a cup or so. It wasn't alot, but it was enough that it soaked everything on the area where the gas is pumped and below it.. And it was dripping off the side like crazy. I didn't know if it would eat through the paint, so I poured an entire bottle of water over that area and tried to wipe it clean. I think I got most off, but I don't know if it did any paint damage. Now, it's like 3 days past and I don't really see anything out of the ordinary. Any inputs? Thanks in advance,

Joon

Cant say that it wont ---but ive done that a lot of times and have never noticed any ill effects from it. If your worried about it, most gas stations have sources to clean the windshield, just riinse off the gas with the sponge. ---Buzz

After I cleaned off the area I would hit it with another coat of wax, Im sure all of it is gone in that area now.

I spilt some gas on my 4Runner and it left a stain. Of course I let it sit on the car for about 2 weeks before I washed it.

The key is getting it off quickly, which you did. I'd wash the area with a mild detergent again thoroughly, and wax it. You should be fine.

Premium fuel is actually more harsh/caustic than regular fuel due to the increased additives.

I try to clean it off because I like clean paint, but you'll be fine even if you leave it on until you wash it again the next time. If you're at a gas station and do it again, you can drench a paper towel in the windshield wash solution and wipe it off with that.

That's what I do.

Just an update. I think it's close to a week now, and I don't see any sign of wear or damage. Thank you guys for the info.

No, gas won't cause damage. Because it leaves and oily finish though it will tend to pick up dust and get dirtier than the clean, waxed paint around it though. That's why I try to clean it off all the time.

But if the vehicle has gritty dirt on it and you spill gas on that paint, it's better to just wait until the next time you wash it rather than try to clean it off. Otherwise you'll scratch the paint cleaning the gas off.

Usually if there is any residue on there just washing or a mild paint cleaner removes any film. I usually put a couple extra of layers of paint protectant in that area and high air contact areas (front of the hood/roof, front pillars, mirrors, etc.) to reduce any damage from the wax/protectant being stripped off.
