Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Dash Rattle – Problems and Solutions", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Don't over look items in the ash tray or having the cup holders out, they rattle like crazy. It is possibly even the cup holder when it is in the closed position. Try removing it and see if it goes away.

I tried removing all the stuff in the dash and the ashtray/cupholder...No change. It sounds like the rattle is coming from the passengers side inside the dash.
Try looking at the weatherstripping / trim on the outside of the windsheild. Was squeaking against the windsheild when at highway speeds and cold. Sounded like it was coming from the passenger side dash or windsheild. Service manager put some one-side sticky thin felt strips between trim and windsheild and has gotten rid of 99% of the noise. Glad it wasn't the windsheild (Brand new 2003 Tundra)
Q. Anyone else think the paint is really fragile and hearing some "klunking" noises from the brakes when first backing up or driving off after it's been sitting for a while?

The klunk noise is the ABS test when you first start-up. It has been noted here in many threads.
The topic of thin paint has been discussed also. Perform a search or look at some of the older threads and you will find a lot of information on both subjects.
I've been using the 1/2" backer rod to keep the "clicking" noise out of my dash for about a year. A while back, the noise came back and I had to put in a new strip. Now it's back and I've put in a third new strip, but the noise wants to persist. Someday I'm going to have to get to the real cause, plastic nubbin to lube, or whatever. When it was new, I the dash open 3 or 4 times trying different things, but nothing helped as much as the foam backer rod. Anybody else have the noise come back?

Well I tried stuffing 1/2" foam rope caulking in the space where the dash meets the windsheild. It worked great for three days and now that rattle/clicking noise is back.
Is this foam rope the same thing that you guys are calling "backer rod" ? I can't find any product called "backer rod"?
What now? Any other suggestions? Should I stuff more foam rope in there?
To reiterate the problem...There is a rattle/clicking noise coming from where the dash meets the window right in front of the passengers airbag. Almost every bump triggers the noise. I can even push up and down on that spot and produce the same noise. It seems to be coming directly under the dash surface.
Does anybody know what is the cause of this problem and what is required to fix it once and for all?
Is there a TSB/recall for this deffect?
If it requires dismantling the dash how long does this take and has anyone here done it themselves?
I had the same problem and tried the backer rod solution. Didn't work. Tried stuffing another piece in there, still didn't work. The squeak in my truck sounds as if it's coming from the middle of the dash against the windshield. It only does it when it's below 50 degrees or so, so I haven't had to worry about it for the last 6 months. With the return of cold weather, the squeaking is back.
Last year I determined that the squeak is coming from the defrost vent that blows on the windshield. If I stick my fingers through the holes in the dash I can feel the vent vibrating like crazy while going down the road. If I hold the vent steady, the squeak goes away. Now it's just a matter of figuring out out to fix it. I'm off work Monday, so maybe I'll get around to working on it then.
I found the 3/8" backer rod to be more effictive as I would shove it farther down where the dashcap meets the vent's plastic pieces. I removed the radio assembly and was able to reach in and see where the dashcap "creaks" against the other plastic pieces below. The 1/2" rod was too large and unsightly to be effictive for me. YMMV Good luck.
i just began experiencing the same problem. my 2002 has just over 2k miles on it, and i used the windshield defroster for the first time on saturday. after that, i would hear what i can only describe as slight clicks. when i was driving, i would put my hand on the dash in front of me and press down slightly. this would make it stop, but when i moved my hand again it started. i don't know what the deal is. usually i can't hear it cause my music is loud. i'm gonna take it to the dealer soon for my first oil change anyway, so i'll have em fix it then.
Going to Home Depot tomorrow to pick up some of that Frost King Backer Rod. The sound it most irritating! Sometimes it sounds like it's behind the clock and other times it's echoing to make it sounld like hte center console is freaking out!
It really trips me out how shobing this inbetween the windsheild and dash will avoiding this noise........
btw...it is a foam or rubber like around the doors?

Here in Arizona we install Dash Mats. They are custom fit to your dash in whatever color you want. They protect the plastic dash from the heat. Cost about $ 39.00. They fit between the windshield and the dash. We can buy them everywhere down here.
Backer Rod ! Ha ! You guys are great ! Who wudda thunk of that one ???
Ran out yesterday and spent a whopping $2 on some and "installed" it last night in 5 minutes. Haven't really had the chance to test it out yet.
One update to the installation procedures - use a spatula to push the rod between the dash and windshield. You don't risk scratching anything\punching holes. Just don't let your wife catch you !
ive had the backing rod in my dash now for about 2 months and the rattles havent come back.... Toyota needs to tell the dealerships about this simple fix. In the 3 years Ive own my truck I had the dealership try to fix the rattle at least 5 times and they never figured it out.
To the person who asked if you can see the rod, my interior color is gray and the color of the frostking rod is dark gray so I didnt push it all the way in. Its almost all the way in but I can still pull it out if I need to and it looks like its supposed to be there....
and for those wondering what kind of noise... it is a tapping noise like a credit card tapping your dash constantly....
I applied the 1/2" caulk backer last year and it compressed slightly, so the squeak came back. I pushed it all the way in (out of sight) and applied one more strip on top (it fits, beautifully). Looks EXACTLY like the foam piece in our Honda Pilot. Really does the job.
Well, I tried a piece of the backer rod between the dash and the glass and the noise is still there. I pushed it all the way in and it still is there. Should I push another piece in or am I looking at the wrong solution? The noise I experience is at cold temperatures and at high speed sounds like a credit card tapping on the dash above the glove-box.
