This mod is great. Just did it. It lives up to all the hype. My truck is silent now. It rattled before and I had no idea what it was. It turns out this was the fix.

I've got to try this. I have had the same squeak in my truck whenever the outside temperture dips and it is driving me nuts.

Well, I tried a piece of the backer rod between the dash and the glass and the noise is still there. I pushed it all the way in and it still is there. Should I push another piece in or am I looking at the wrong solution?
You may have the backer rod pushed in too far...

I did this mod last summer and thought I got it right. Unfortunately, when the cold weather came back so did my squeak. A few weeks ago I took the old backer rod out and put a new piece in. This time, I didn't push it all the way in -- only about half way -- and the squeaks are gone. I think the key is having the backer rod push the dash straight out from the windshield, not up/down and out as would happen if you pushed the backer rod in too far. The rod is more noticeable this time -- not bad, but I couldn't see it at all last time -- but the noise is gone.

Try using the next size up. I believe its 5/8". It will goes in real tight but will settle nicely. I used the 5/8" just over a year ago and the noise has not returned and it shouldn't as tight a fit as it was. You can still see it but it looks like it belongs there. Should be invisible if you have a dash mat.

The first time I put it between the dash and the windshield as you have described. Drove out on the road and "tap-tap". I then continued to push it in little by little until it was gone.

I'll try again. I don't mind it showing at all. Kind of looks like it belongs there when its between the dash and the glass.

Thanks for the replies. Let me know of any other suggestions you have. This is the ONLY thing about my Tundra after 25,000 miles that is making me NUTS!

Angry Dash rattle

I have a 2001 Tundra TRD 4x4 with an annoying rattle coming from the the dash. I think it is actually underneath the interior vents below the windshield. Talk about frustrating! Does anyone else have this problem or a fix. The dealer wants to chalk it up to expansion and contraction. Yeah, right!

There are a few threads regarding this and everybody seems to fix it with a $2.00 piece of backer rod from the home depot.

Do a search for backer rod or home depot and you will find out more!

I'm going to look for this Frost King stuff at the Home Depot this weekend. That damn creak is driving me out of my freaking mind!! Only when it's cold and when there's been hot air coming out of the upper vents, but...every bump, every time I brake, aauugh!

I can see the principle in how the backer rod works. I've tried while driving putting my hand on the back of the dash, sticking my fingers in the air grate, and pulling. The creaking stops. Sticking the backer rod in must push the dash forward enough to separate whatever is touching. I hope it works for me.

Well, I couldn't wait...the drive to work this morning was enough to send me to Home Depot at lunchtime. So when I got home, I jammed a section down there (used a plastic-like hamburger flipper). Then took it for a quick test drive: no noise. Success? We'll see. At least for the 10 minutes I drove it after inserting that stuff, I was greeted with blissful silence. Not that damn squeak, creak, squeak.... I hope it lasts.

Hmmmm.....well, actually...when I say "spatula", I think of a rubber tipped device that is generally used in mixing bowls. Although I guess there could be an argument either way. I don't know....it was the first thing I pulled out of the kitchen drawer.

Whatever I used, it worked pretty nicely.

I guess they are both spatuas (or at least I call them both spatulas). I used a a plastic-like hamburger flipper type spatula to do mine too.

Default thanks jnespappa!

thanks to jnespappa....my dash is free from the creak! i installed it today in about 3 minutes. i used the crimped end of a lotion tube and pushed the foam between the dash & windshield. i think i mighty push too far as you can barely see it. but the creaking is gone so far. if it does come back, i may have to back the foam out a bit.

none the less...very easy mod...
