This is a discussion thread titled "Dash Rattle – Problems and Solutions", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My sanity has been restored! Thanks to everyone that provided the information about the backer rod fix (aka - caulk saver) for the dash rattle. I cut a piece the entire length of the dash, tucked it in between the windshield and the vent, and the rattle is history. A 5 minute job with a 3 minute coffee break!
This morning on the way to work, the dreaded creaking started again -- not as bad as before, but definitely there. I did the backer rod mod last summer, but re-did it again about a month ago because I think I had the rod too far in and the creaking was terrible. Anyway, now after a month of silence, the creaking is coming back. This got me thinking... The very thing that makes the backer rod an easy to install solution to the creaking problem is the very thing that makes it temporary -- it's very compressible.
Basically, I think after a while (your mileage may vary), the rod gets compressed to the point that it no longer applies outward pressure on the dash from the windshield and the creaking returns.
I'm looking for something a little more permanent...does anyone know where I could get some rubber cord? The cord would have to be smaller than the backer rod -- say 1/4" - 3/8" in order to fit between the windshield and the dash. Since it wouldn't compress like the backer rod did, this might be a permanent fix to something that's been driving me crazy for 2 winters now...

i wonder if we could use the door jam rubber? you know, the seal around the doors is pretty flexible and to the best of my assumption would provide the continuous outward pressure.

I'm on my 3rd strip of backer rod. They do dry out, shrink, and become compressed. When you take the old one out, it will be a rectangular shape with depressions on both sides. On this last one, it still creaked for a few days after I installed it. I was about ready to trade off the truck when suddenly the noise stopped. Truck must have been reading my mind! At any rate, if yours is still creaking with new backer rod in there, give it a few days before you do anything drastic.

It really pains me that I have to go through this nonsense. NO one should have to deal with this on a nearly $30 grand vehicle. Who has actually taken the dash apart and sucessfully gotten rid of the squeaks by sticking something between the various rubbing surfaces.
I'll tell ya' I'm about sick of listening to it ! ! I have stuffed enough backer rod to own the "Frost King" company ! I'm gonna have to get under there at some point to remove it. When it FINALLY warms up here I will attempt to do just that.....take it down and find out WHAT THE HECK THAT NOISE IS ! !
What diameter backer rod is everyone using in the dash? I used 3/8" the first time and the squeeks came back in less than a month. I guess I'll try 1/2" next.
i am going to do my dash this weekend when i put the new radio in, what i was wondering was? do you put the backer rod across the whole dash, or just a piece in the middle where the noise is coming from? thanks
I left about 3 inches on each side open. And I used 1/2 inch Frost King. It's been fantastic, I love it....quiet, like it was new. But it's only been about a week, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
