Originally posted by jcstepside I used the backer rod (1/2 inch) and it still squeaks and creaks. Have had Toyotas in the past and NEVER had a squeak before.
It works for ticks and clicks, not squeaks and creaks!

I told my local service Rep. about our backer rod trick and that Toyota dealership is already aware of it. They remove the dash and treat the dash mounting bolts, reinstall the dash and then put in backer rod. They do it no charge under warranty.
The mounting bolts MAY be the source of the additional squeeks.
I went to my local dealer as I occasionally have the "clicks and ticks" in my dash.
I brought with me the string below and made an inquiry regarding the installation of the backer rod.
It took them all day to figure out that Toyota didn't have any repair notification regarding the issue and that there 6 mile test drive did not produce any noise. (no wonder toyota has such an outstanding customer service rating)
I was wondering if any of you, with this problem, have noticed a particular circumstance when your noise issue was most noticable? temp or what
Dash rattle finally fixed by dealer! I dropped it off yesterday and the dealer told me that per Toyota, the defroster setup was not installed correctly, which causes the rattle. They ordered new defroster nozzles and clips and installed them today. I picked up the car and the dash is silent. I did the foam strip between the window and dash for a while, but the rattle always came back. Hopefully now its fixed for good!
No cost for parts or labor, it was covered by the warranty, my truck has about 15,000 miles. If yours/ or anyone elses tundra has under 30,000 miles and the dash rattles, I would get your dealer to fix it, and not mess with the foam strips. I dont know for sure that the defroster setup is the cuase for all of the dash rattles out there, but I have a suspicion that it may be.
Dont know how much it would cost out of warranty, the parts probably are not that much, but the dealer had it for a day and a half, so it may have been a pretty labor intensive process.

Do you know if they were working on it for a day and a half or do you think some of that was just waiting for an open spot?

I fix stuff for a living and when it comes down to telling the cust. what the problem is you try not to blame the product and if the cust is upset and your back to fix the unit again they expect answers, but what the cust will never know is the real truth about the matter. What im trying to say is your truck will probaly make noise this winter and you were given a line just like the rest of us who brought their trucks in more then one time to be fixed. But hey I could be wrong ,lets hope.
Mine doesnt make noise anymore after I had the window replaced and its been 20 k since dont know what that kid did but thank god.
Keiphers, good question, its hard to tell. I called Wednesday early afternoon and they were currently working on it, and they told me it was taking longer than they originally thought, and they mentioned they had not done much work in the past that involved removing the tundra dashboard. Later in the day, they told me that they needed to keep it overnight, and they set me up with a rental car, they called at Noon the next day and it was finished. Long story short - I have no idea how long it took them, probably not the whole day and a half though.
Mine is in the shop right now for a rattle in the dash board from what seems to be in the very upper right hand corner of the dash, near the windshield.
I took the glove box out and a black plastic piece and I can't put my finger on it. Took it in this morning and took the service manager for a test drive, he said he couldn't figure it out right away either but would take a look at it.
*EDIT* I also had the backer rod installed until last night when I took it back out thinking they would "claim" that is what was causing it. So, I had the backer rod in, but it still did it, took it out, still does it.

I was offered the same service by my local dealer. I told them about the caulking backer rod trick and they already knew about it. The service rep. told me they remove the dash and isolate a couple of clips under the dash to prevent the noise, AND they put in the backer rod to keep the dash from rubbing on the windshield.
If Mercer was fed a line of bull, then I was given the same line. Good to know it worked out for you, Mercer.
There is a actually a dash noise isolation kit available for the dash that the dealer originally developed for the tacoma (I think). They do have something to deal with the plastic clips as they hit the dash.
It's kind of a weak design. Easier to put the dash in and take it out but the obvious downside is the squeaking.
To really fix the issue you need to put material around the clips so that plastic isn't rubbing against plastic. Anthing else is just going to help change the pressure on the rubbing plastic surfaces but the problem is that it's still ..... rubbing. So the noise issue isn't really solved.
You know, it would have been so much better if the put some rubber fingers on there or something instead of the hard plastic clips.

Because of the way things were handled, I seriously doubt that I was given the run-around by the dealership. When the dealer told me what the problem was they set up an appointment for me to bring my truck back because they needed to order some parts (the clips and nozzles for the defroster) Two days later, I actually received a card in the mail telling me that my parts had arrived. After dropping the truck off for the second time, they needed to keep it over night, and they paid for a rental car. When I picked up the truck, the invoice showed all of the parts they ordered, with the part numbers I believe. I just dont think they would go to all that trouble to "tell me what I wanted to hear" But, who knows?? So far, so good with the dash, its still silent.
