This is a discussion thread titled "Dash Rattle – Problems and Solutions", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I own a 2002 Tundra 4x4 and it also has an extremely annoying squeak/rattle in the dash and I plan to bring it to the dealership to get them to fix it. Are the other rattles you are talking about coming from the rear passenger door? Mine rattles there and I was going to have the dealership look into that as well. If anyone has experienced this and has a solution please let me know.
Thanks,
Nathan
For the rear door squeak, put alittle grease on the door latch and the door jam.
Your rear door rattle is from it being out of adjustment. Have Toyota realign it. Mine had the same problem. I'm taking my truck in next week to have the dash squeak taken care of. Has anyone else had the dealer fix this and what did they do?
I have a 2002 Access Cab, and in cold weather, the dash greaked and groaned(no noise in warm weather). The dealer had the truck 2 days, and took tje dash apart. Some foam pads were installed, and all is OK.
Help removing dashboard to fix dash squeak (reposted)
Has anyone ever removed the dashboard?
I've found the source of my dash squeak that shows up in cold weather to be the orange dashboard clip that holds the dash to the firewall behind the airbag. I've removed the glove department and have been able to get my hand between the ECU and the steel reinforcement bar to feel the play in the clip. I can also see the clip with a mirror and flashlight.
I'd like to remove the top part of the dash to grease the clips, and would like to know the following:
1. Does the lower part of the dash need to be removed first?
2. Are there any hidden bolts?
3. Are there any plastic pieces to the dash that are sensitive to breaking off,
when the dash is removed?
I cannot belive it, I went to Home Depot and picked up the backer rod, here in NJ it is used when you are caluking around a window and you have a big gap, You shove the backer rod in first and save caulking. Well it comes in 3/8 and 1/2 inch size, about $3.00 I used the 1/2 inch and shoved it in with my wifes spatula and presto the dash squeek is gone. The dealer said they would have to remove the dash and it could take several days, it took me 10 min.

I had the dealer fix mine. It took less than half a day and everything is quiet as can be. Never cost anything except that I had to yell at them while I was trying to get the job done.
had the dealer fix... they installed the foam inside it... and it was fine for about 6 months... then warm weather and the next cold season all kinds of rattles and squeeks back... pulled center bezzel and greased the edges with some heavy silicon grease... that got half my squeaks... installed the backer rod and now almost all squeeks gone... occasional squeek on rough road... and considering I drive a washboarded dirt road 8 miles each way 5 days a week I have some.. but no longer is it so bad that I want pull my hair out.. turn the radio up all the way and punch the dash....
Be careful hitting it. I hit mine (possibly a little too hard), and I left a dent in the center of the dashboard where it curves over the radio. now I can't get rid of the dent in my otherwise perfect interior.

is there a tsb for dash rattle?? link please...........
Shek, I got my SR5 about a week before you, and I have a dash rattle, too. It sounds like it's coming from under the steering column. I just drove from DC to Maine to Washington to Nevada (about 5000 miles with zig-zags) and had to bear it the entire way. As the weather is warmer here than during my winter travels in the North, the sound has dissipated almost completely. I'm resigned to hearing the noise every winter or during cold mornings here in the high Sierras. When it's warm, or when I drive near the Toy dealer, the sound goes away.
God I'm glad I'm not the only one who is driven crazy by squeak and rattle.
I am plaqued by the same problem and have used the fist technique more than once.
Like most people have quoted, the squeak goes away when the temperature rises. I think Toyota used dissimilar plastics when manufacturing the instrument panel. I also think that the tolerances grow, i.e., more space between components, when the temperature sinks.
I've taken mine to the dealer for that purpose, and had it verified by the technician. He said it may be coming from the soft cup holder and ordered a new one. I didn't follow up on the part, the dealer never informed me that it was in (a common occurance with the Red Holman dealership). So here I sit with an otherwise great truck that rattles. Hey Toyota's just don't rattle. The Camry pool cars I drive at work are rattle free with 100K on the odo!
I hate to say this, but sometimes I think that the more domestic design input we have, e.g., American, the more confusing, decorative and noisy the interiors become. Oh well that's my two cents worth.
Maybe Toyota will read this thread and post a "fix it" proceedure so the technicans will have a bonified process to follow!
I enjoyed reading all of the messages from the other members...Keep up the good work!
I've been a regular for a while, and still have heard nothing on my worst noise-making problem. After my truck sits in a parking lot a while, especially when the sun comes out, it makes a very audible popping sound when I start driving it. It appears to be coming from the passenger front door or dash. It used to happen in extreme heat only, but now as the temperature exceeds 72 degrees, the sound starts again. It's sounds exactly like someone snapping their fingers. I've banged on it, pulled on stuff, put backer rod in every crevace, but can't figure it out. This is the only time my dash makes noise, as it is perfect in the winter. Any help would be appreciated.
I bought my '04 DC Tundra about 2 months ago, and about 2 weeks ago a really annoying rattle started coming from the passenger side of the dash. I cannont pin point exactly where it's coming from, so I was wondering if anyone here might have an idea and how to stop it? There's a plastic plug at the top of the glove box opening, and I was hoping it was something to do with that, but from what I have tried to stop it, it isn't.
I just did a search on this topic, which I probably should have done in the first place, and noticed several topics, but none gave a for sure way to fix it. I thought Toyota's were supposed to have excellent build quality? I traded in a '98 F-150 for this and it never had a single rattle. Oh well, I guess I just need a louder stereo and exhaust to cover up the rattle.
