This is a discussion thread titled "Dash Rattle – Problems and Solutions", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just did a search on this topic, which I probably should done in the first place, and noticed several topics, but none gave a for sure way to fix it. I thought Toyota's were supposed to have excellent build quality? I traded in a '98 F-150 for this and it never had a single rattle. Oh well, I guess I just need a louder stereo and exhaust to cover up the rattle.
Your under warranty - take it to the dealer.

Is it a squeaking/rattle?? Are your windows all the way up or down??
Many of us here in the NorCal, aka, dust bowl of California tend to get these rattle/squeaks when dust gets between the windshield and dashboard...
It's easily fixed by wedging some small diameter (3/8-1/2 inch) foam pieces between the dash and windshield. It puts just enough pressure and space between the two to stop the rattles.
OR..if your windows are down...make sure they're ALL the way down, or all the way up. The ground in between lends itself to annoying rattles of the window itself.
Otherwise, I second the louder radio and exhaust mods.

I too have an annoying 'tick' sound that seems to be coming from under the dash. But then at times it's as if maybe it's coming from the back, so it's hard to pinpoint. But I highly suspect under the dash(wires or cables 'tapping' against metal maybe). I have the opposite experience as others here, most Toyota trucks I've been in have some rattle coming from the dash area. And when I mention a rattle to other Toyota truck owners, many of them agree that they have some dash rattles too. /Mike

I bought my '04 DC Tundra about 2 months ago, and about 2 weeks ago a really annoying rattle started coming from the passenger side of the dash. I cannont pin point exactly where it's coming from, so I was wondering if anyone here might have an idea and how to stop it? There's a plastic plug at the top of the glove box opening, and I was hoping it was something to do with that, but from what I have tried to stop it, it isn't.
Thanks,
Jason
My old 2002 AC had this annoying rattle in the dash only after they installed an alarm system/remote starter. The funny part is, it did not rattle in the Winter?? and only when the outside temps got higher than 70 degrees??. I never got down to getting it fixed, and traded in the AC three months ago for the '04 Double Cab. So far, so good with the DC. It's rock solid after 2500 miles
Just pointing out the stupidly obvious but if you keep anything in your ashtray ie:change or keys they will rattle. If you have anything in your glove box like pens or extra fuses or bulbs or glasses, these are often culprits of dash rattles.
If you are out of warranty take the dash apart and hunt it down.

I had a squeeking sound from the dash of my 2000 Tundra, mostly in the cold weather. If I put preasure on the top of the console, it quit. Finally pulled the center console and put grease on all of the places where it mounted against the rest of the dash. Seemed to go away after that.
Had a 1979 F250 with a terrible rattle behind the seat, never got around to looking at it. It would come and go with the rpm change. Took it to the dealer one day to trade in and he drove it and said I should try to fix that rattle. Leaned the seat forward, the clamp on the jack was loose, tightened it up and never heard it again. Lived with it all that time and took 2 seconds to fix.
Sometimes it's the simple things. Good luck finding it, I can't stand rattles in my dash either......but the ones in my head don't bother me at all, go figure?
Happy Hauling,
Doug

I had a noise in my dash that was right behind the radio at about 1500 miles on my 2004 Tundra. I took it to the dealer and made sure the shop manager heard it. From there they spent several days on it and finnally found that the bracket the holds the amplifier in the dash was loose. They replaced it with a new bracket and the noise is gone.
It was the craziest thing I have ever seen/heard but the dealer worked until they fixed it. It is covered under waranty and I would tell you just to bring it in and let them worry about it.
I can give you more details on the sound, how often it happened and how I could make it stop/start if you want. Just let me know..
Like some of you I've put the foam padding between the windshield and dash, wrapped wires in foam and duct tape and still had a rattle. It started at 23K and I'm not at 55K. The service writter had stepped out for a sec and a tech asked if he could help....I was inquiring about a brake job, but then mentioned the rattle in the dash. If I took one fingure and placed in on or in front of the airbag...the rattle stopped. He said there was a TSB on Taco's but not tundras for a loose airbag. He popped in two washers on each side of the mounting bracket and I'll be darned if the thing doesn't rattle any more. For those of you who have had these annoying rattles you know what i mean when i say he is a saint. THANK you for the fix and maybe some of you guys can try it.

Jason, I wouldn't screw with it. Just bring it in to the dealer. You'll probably have to make a couple of trips when they don't fix it the first time, but eventually they'll find the squeak even if they have to replace the whole dashboard to do it (the vinyl/plastic only of course).
Many people have been through this and often it's different things but it's best to get it worked out as soon as you can so that you're still within warrantee if you find it doesn't "stick". Then they have to solve the problem on their dime and not on yours.
not a rattle.
Wasn't there talk of the ground cable causing a tick to go to the dash via the cowl.I remember a pic of someone moving the ground strap to the ps bracket on the fender.
I use to notice it in cold weather in my '02.But I really do not notice it any more.
Hope you get it resolved.
