This is a discussion thread titled "Dash Rattle – Problems and Solutions", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Just did the dash mod that other members here suggested for dash creak, it works! The creak in my dash was driving me nuts, could not figure out what was causing it. Went to Home Depot, bought some 1/2 inch Backer Rod, shoved it between the dash and windshield from end to end(perfect fit), and bada bing! No creak!
To whomever thought of this fix....thanks for sharing!
What is this 1/2'' backer rod supposed to be used for? What section would I find it in?, I have some dash creak, and it is pissing me off. It sounds like its coming from the center of the dash.

Backer Rod is used for caulking, supposed to set a good bead etc. It is round insulation foam rubber that can be found in the insulation section of Home Depot. I didn't think the 1/2 inch size would fit between the dash and the windshield but you will be surprised, it fit's in there perfectly! Just use a small screwdriver or something to push it down for a snug fit. Good luck!
Originally posted by Montfort For those of you that have done this fix, is the caulking visible/noticeable once inserted in place?
No caulking needed with this mod! All you are doing is using the Backer Rod by itself to stop the creak. The Backer Rod slips nicely into place between the dash and the windshield from end to end. You can use a small screwdriver to push it down to get a snug fit. When in place it is hardly noticeable, very clean! Again, no caulking needed!
I admit it... I don't even know what to listen for to detect the dash creak.
Can someone give me some hints on when I should hear it and what it should sound like?
Mark
The noise sounds like someone tapping the edge of a business card on a table. It's most noiceable in cold weather and goes away usually when summer comes. It will absolutely drive you nuts. Sometimes it sounds like it's coming from the center pod and other times it sounds like it's at the base of the windshield. The Frost King foam backer rod will end your problem if you have it.

Yes, it is the exact sound that I had before I installed the Backer Rod. This mod will take care of that problem! Again, thanks to the person responsible for this fix.
all right i went to home depot and asked two guys where the backer rods were and they looked at me like i wasnt speaking english. this is the second time thats happened to me since ive been on this site, both times at home depot. come on guys- whats the real name of the stuff that works with the dash and what is it used for? thatll help next time i go in to home depot and ask those jokers where it is. also, this doesnt cover up the defroster? i havent looked but now that i think about there should be seperate vents right? thanks for the help.
The material you need is caulk backing. Home Depot carries Frost King brand caulk backing. It comes in 3/8 and 1/2 inch rolls. If I remember correctly you will find it in the weather stripping section. It'll be a package about the size of a gallon ziploc.
I recently purchased a used 2000 Toyota Tundra. It's the red access cab model with Package C. I love the truck.
One small problem though. The truck has this annoying dash rattle that occurs when I hit any small or big bump on the road. The noise seems to be coming from the passengers side of the dash.
Anyone have similar problems? Is this just the nature of the beast? The truck only has 43000 highway/city km's on it. I wouldn't expect any noise.
Is it a rattle or a squeak? If it's a rattle, try taking everything out of the glovebox and see if it happens again. Could be something loose and shaking around.
If it's a squeak, a fellow TS'er Redmond came up with a great solution. Go to Home Depot or wherever and get some Frost King 1/2" caulk backing and stick it in btwn the dash and windshield. You should be able to find it in the weather stripping section of the store.
Lot of members have done this quick and simple mod and it works terrific!
