Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "painting the rear tail lights red?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Is there any surface preperation required when it comes to painting the rear tail lights? Did anyone have to do any sanding or scraping? Can someone who has never done any painting like this before do this? I've never touched a spray paint can to paint anything, yet I've read a lot about how to properly spray paint using a can, and various types of spray guns. Hey, I have to read something when I'm doing my "business" in the bathroom. ;-)
You need to sand the taillights first with some 1500 grit sand paper. At least I think that is what I used. Then clean them up good with a damp rag or air compressor and tape them off.
Pretty easy, put multiple light coats on, not one heavy coat.

peid, thanks for the tips. I may do that with the stock covers, but I like my new clear-red-clear tail lights. Plus, I ordered some halogen red turn signals for the top spot to give me that red-red-clear look without having to paint anything. I'll see how I like it, and if it works well I'm more than willing to share pictures with y'all.
i know this is a very old thread but i figured i would bring it back to life...
i finally got around to painting my turn signals red to match the brake light. its a very cheap and easy mod for someone looking to get a little different look! oh and btw thanks to peid and dyogim for the inspiration . theres a pic in my gallery.
Forgive me for my ignorance. Do you paint over the red section too or just the amber section. Do you clearcoat the whole lens (not including the black bars that seperate the different sections of the taillamp)?

Tape off the black borders and the clear lens, clean the painting surface. Use some paint from the hobby shop provided in a rattle can. Pick your color and start spraying the amber lens and red lens. Spray thin layers and in multiple passes. Let each layer dry for a few minutes then, spray the next. Once, you've achieved what you want, spray some clear coat. Either from the hobby shop or a local automotive store. Make multiple passes and in thin layers until you've achieved what you are looking for.
Either remove the tape while it's drying or afterwards. Just be sure to take a razor blade along the seems as not to pull the paint off the surface.
