Default Looking to Buy 91-95 Landcruiser

ANyone have any good pointers to look for when test driving one of these badboys. I like the style and basically i've always wanted one of those years but now i am being a cautious buyer. i am possibly going to get a 94 with atleast 100k on it for 5-6k dollars. And in xint condition but test driving this weekend. Since i never owned one what should i look for and expect to have issues with if i drive alot?

91-97 have the same body style, they are 80 series landcruisers. The 91-92 are FJ80 and have a 155hp Inline 6, semi floater rear axle, rear drum brakes, 15" wheels, etc. The 93-97 are FZJ80 and have a 212hp DOHC inline 6 (big difference in power), most also have full floater rear axle, 4 wheels ABS with discs at all corners, 16" wheels, factory tinted windows, etc. though there are a very few "poverty pack" FZJ80 which did not have some of these features. The optional front/rear locking differentials were only available on the 93-97 FZJ80. The Lexus LX450 is also a twin to the Land Cruiser, with the exception of some body cladding, spiffier leather, climate control and a different sound system.

Read the newbie guide which you can find at Sleeoffroad.com - Toyota SUV Off-Road Outfitters , in the tech section.

X2 Ben's post. When I first read it, I was going to send you to slee, but, it's already done. I would recommend getting a '93 on, and FZJ.

Thanks guys, i ended up getting a 94, not sure if theres a difference like today's toyotas with the classifications of SR5, limited and all that junk. I drove if from San Diego area all the way back to LA. It took the hills ok with the power, its a 94 with 114k miles. Flush the radiator today, and charged the A/C but it feels like my ABS acts up when i stop slowly, is this common?
It does have disc all around, i noticed that after bleeding the brakes. I did noticed a leak but all in due time. Has little things like interior that need to be replaced, but i did notice a knob that says DIFF LOCK, FF and then FF&RR, is this a good thing? And a damn button that has ECT. To many buttons. But if it was the 80's i'd be screaking "I LOVE WHAT YOU DO FOR ME, TOYOTA!" So now we have a Sequoia, Tundra, 4Runner, and the outstanding Landcruiser.

94 with 114k is nice mileage!

Land Cruisers only have one trim line. No sr5, limited, etc.

These are big, heavy trucks, I'm not surprised if it needs a bit of brake work.

Diff lock is a gooood thing

Head to mud:IH8MUD.com - "The Truth is in the Rocks" and do some reading and searching!

Good luck!

Yes, Diff Lock is a very, very good thing. It is the #1 sought after feature by enthusiasts on both the 80 series, and 98 and 99 UZJ100 series (2000 + got traction control, so diff locks were'nt necessary). Make sure they work. They need to be excercised every so often, per se. So if the PO never did it, they maybe locked up and in need of some help to engage, so check it in dirt, not asphalt.

What kind of ABS problem?

X2, take a trip over to IH8MUD, you'll find everything you need plus some. That, and you'll become jealous and realize all of the cool mods you need to do to that new rig of yours.

Herculz, how has this been holding up? Does it drive normal or does it feel like a 14yr old truck. I had a neighbor selling one & I thought about it but was unsure with reliability on that old of a vehicle.
