today on edmunds.com it stated the 08 land cruiser has an diesel engine. edmunds says:
"SYDNEY, Australia — Toyota's completely redesigned Land Cruiser 200 series made its world auto show debut in Australia prior to a November on-sale date.
The big SUV gets a new 4.5-liter twin-turbo diesel V8 engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission as well as an optional 4.7-liter V8 with a five-speed. Toyota claims better fuel economy on both engines than on previous-generation Land Cruisers.
Longer, wider and taller, the new Land Cruiser has a more imposing presence. The all-new platform retains its full-frame structure. A technical highlight much mentioned here is the Australia-developed kinetic dynamic suspension system (KDSS), which is standard on all Land Cruiser models.
Other features are a Torsen limited-slip center differential, multiterrain ABS, and — on gasoline models — a "crawl control" function.
Toyota has not yet released prices but they are expected to top out at more than U.S. $90,000 for the top-end Sahara model.
What this means to you: Toyota Land Cruisers are beloved in this rugged country, and this latest new version is sure to maintain that tradition — especially with Aussie-developed technology in it."

I wouldn't get my hopes up that the diesel will make it's way over here (US). IIRC, all Land Cruisers since the 40 series have had diesel options but haven't made it to the US yet. Though the 5.7l petrol is nothing to sneeze at.

Yep. They have put diesels in all the Cruisers form the BJ40 (FJ40 with a 4 cyl diesel) on up in Australia and Canada. I'm not sure about the 100 series though.
They have never offered a factory diesel in the US.
You can also get lots of other great options overseas that were never offered here.
I drove a GX grade LandCruiser diesel 5spd M/T in the middle east. Every since then, I have always loved the base version LCs over the leather loaded up ones. Something aboutem makes them soo much better

Darn marketing weenies!
The Toyota Land Cruiser is not sold in Canada. I don't know why as I'm sure there would be a market for it. However, the Lexus LX is availabe in Canada.
If it can meet strict emissions standards, I bet the 4.5 liter twin turbo would be an absolutely excellent engine for the Tundra half ton diesel, if such a thing were made. Dodge, Ford, and GM all have 1/2 ton diesels coming out (the GM diesel is actually a 4.5 liter turbo).
