Land CruiserGeneral discussion forum
This is a discussion thread titled "How can I increase power in 02 cruiser?", within the Land Cruiser forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I've never modified an engine with performance chips etc, but now I'm curious:
I have an 02 Landcruiser with the 235hp 4.7l V8. It was either '03 or '04 that bumped the same engine up another 37 or so hp. How was that accomplished? With different programming on the chip? If so, can a later model chip be used to boost the power in my 02? Sorry for the novice question. Thanks!

Unfortunately, no. The increase is due to the addition of Variable Valve Timing, or VVTI. It's pretty much impossible to add to an older 2uz.
Your best bets are exhaust, headers, etc., but those are only marginal increases and aren't really worth it.
Besides, it's a land cruiser, it's meant to cruise.

The early 70's Land Cruiser's that could conquer any kind of off road terrain did 0 - 60 MPH in 19.5 seconds according to a 1972 Consumer Reports road test - about the same as a VW Bug of that era.
My point is an off road vehicle doesn't need alot of power to go anywhere.
Thanks for the info. My next question was going to be about the headers, airfilters, etc. Any idea what does "marginal" increases mean in numbers, like 0-5hp or >10?

Well said. In fact, my wife calls it the "Zen Cruiser" whereas I call it the "Land Bruiser".

So true, but I now use it climb mountain passes in the Rockies to ski more than my offroad/expedition vehicle, which is why I was asking.
Check the ih8mud forums, there's not alot to do other than forced induction. I drove my '98 LX (same vehicle as yours) over Mt. Hood (on the highway ), fully loaded with 3 adults and 2 kids, cargo area literally full from floor to ceiling, I had no problems going ~70mph most of the way, only going slower for traffic or tight curves.

Put her in the next lower gear and you'll be able to maintain any legal speed. The engine might be spinning at 3500 - 4000 RPM, but Toyota engines are not strained or stressed at those engine speeds (unlike American pushrod V8's)
.
LC' s...it's all about the engine/drivetrain torque.
That is the LC's strength. It has low final drive gearing.
As above posted ...take out of OD ..use ECT. Then if needed drop to next lower gear. Yu will surely pull a house down!
You can not make a Rocket Ship out of a Tractor.
Not the carefully intended design of this vehicle.
Playing with the intake alone (CAI, etc.) will yield little HP.
Little cost benefit.
I would drop in a K&N air filter or a TRD version at best for approx $40.00, if yu haven't already, And see what happens.
At least they are washable/reusable for life of vehicle. That IS a cost/benefit by itself. If not for added breathing with a possible 5HP gain.( not much) But it might work for yu.
How much does a MAF sensor cost? On a Lexus forum a 1993 LS400 owner said the Lexus dealer wanted $1000 for a new MAF sensor. Google "K&N MAF Sensor" before deciding whether or not there are potential $$consequences$$ of using a washable K&N in place of a factory original filter.

KR, I planted the bait and waited your expected reply.
You couldn't wait...You bit like there was no tomorrow.
You want to keep selling that OE stuff , don't you??
Everything else is just NO GOOD, right???
Is Toyota really that hard up??? Yu guys gotta stop it here! It's dirty and underhanded. Shame on Toyota.
STOP the negative propaganda that viable aftermarket products are "BAD for ANY and ALL Toyotas".
A Google will get yu alot of BS negative Urban Myth Hype too... The Industry works this way ...Enough

K&N filters bring the suck, the OEM filter is superior in many ways. No, I don't sell Toyota parts. If you are ever off road or in dusty environs, I wouldn't risk it.
