I found this board doing a google search. I need help trying to find the starter on my 99 landcruiser. I took it to the dealer to change but they wanted $790 to replace my starter. I figured for that price I'll do it on my own with a friends help.

Also if anyone has any tips that would be great!
Thanks in advance!
That's a pretty fair price. $350 or more for parts and 4 hours of labor.
The starter is under the intake manifold and the labor should be no more than $300 per ALL DATA, and the starter is approx $311+ intake gaskets if you change them.

That's seems a little light on the labor cost. But I guess it depends on where you have it done. It's a pretty long job. Much longer if you've never done it before.
It's not that the job is complex, it's just that it's a LOT of unbolting and bolting.
I think that someone on here chronicled their starter contacts replacement on their Tundra and this is basically the same process. Once you get beneath the manifold, the rest is just a normal swap.
What a lousy place to put the starter. But it's due to the constraints for the original Lexus application.
I'm sure they're not going to do that again for the larger replacement engine coming. It's not necessary. Though it will be interesting to see if any plans have changed with these slightly higher gas prices.
ALL DATA which is what we use pays 3.2 Labor hours@ $89 per hr.
Realistically a trained Tech should be able to do it in 1/2 hr-1 hr.
Someone who doesnt know as much it will be a harder job, and will take a few hours.
Its 8 bolts and 4 nuts on the intake manifold
1 fuel line (22mm wrench)
1 Return fuel line (depending on year)
1 intake tube from air cleaner
2 bolts and 2 nuts to remove throttle body, leave hoses attached
Unplug injectors-do not remove them or the fuel rails.
The hardest part is removing the bolt that secures the harness to the back of the head and the 2 starter bolts.
Just makes sure the engine is cold, makes things easier, not having to slave over a hot engine.
Ciao

Interesting dilema between book and actual. Toyota here bills it at something like 4 hours - I'd have to see what they billed toyota on warrantee. The last I had something done at the dealer it was a standard $100 an hour around here but I'd guess it's at least up to $105 now if not more. Wouldn't shock me if they're doing $110 an hour since it's been a couple years.
You're right though. The first time at anything is always the hardest. Takes half as long the second time. Too bad that most of the time there isn't ever a need for a second time.

You know, I bet by now if you "raced" you'd probably be able to do it in a half hour.
Alan
Funny you mentioned that. I did race one of the new kids 1 time, you know the type. Fresh out of school and KNOWS EVERYTHING, has the race car HONDA.
He was working on a Tundra and I had a Sequoia, both had the same problem. The starter just went "CLICK/CLICK". We each set out the tools we thought it would need and had the new starter in the bench ready to go and had some one time us.
He went first , so he couldnt see how i did it. (no cheating so to speak)
Took him almost 57 minutes
Took me ..........18 minutes
He wasnt thrilled about all the humble pie made from fresh CROW he had to eat.
Needless to say this guy didnt last long and now works for FORD.

Ah, that's one of the things that can makes work fun. Then you get to see how fast it can really be done. Though to be fair, it's not really a matched competition unless you've done it couple times.
Do you know, is there a supercharger available for the landcruiser version of the v-8? I would assume the Tundra/Sequoia versions don't crossover unless the computer is the same and I'd be shocked if it was.

I know I had a unfair advantage, but this kid was very errogant and needd to be put in his place.
He thought his 20 years younger than me and my broken back would be the defining factor.
Then reality set in. (20yr exp goes a long way)
Yes there WAS a S/C for a L/C, but there again the ECU would be the issue. They are all calibrated different (seq/Tun/LC), I was told DO NOT INTERCHANGE THEM, by TRD. Each ECU has parameters set into it, that are very different for each vehicle.

Yeah, the computer is the bottleneck. It's kind of unfortunate that the programming is very vehicle/use specific.
Though I imagine that in many ways TRD is covering their butts even when something is technically compatible but is actually untested by engineering so the safe answer is "hands off and dont' do it" .

Alan,
Just to give you some real world data on your question. I own a 99LX470 and have installed a TRD supercharger kit from a 00-02 Sequoia. I have ecu install manuals for both the Seq and LC/LX. The ecu pinouts, 9th injector and ebc piggyback are are identical. The install went without a hitch. I had to make a couple of the accessory brackets and mount the piggy back ecu with yet another bracket. The driveability?? Seamless and smooth. OBDII reads out just fine. I did somewhat go out on a limb on this deal but really wanted to supercharge our LX. I kicked myself for not getting one of these before they were discontinued. I know about the "rods" in the engine but the way we drive the LX and tow...I just dont think it will be an issue.
Bottom line, I think if you own a 98-02 LC/LX....you can use the 00-02 Seq or Tundra TRD supercharger if you up to making a few brackets. Simple stuff to mount the wiring harness and such.
Hope that helps and how is that for my first post?

Thats great info. The only thing I would question, IS.....
Would it pass smog in CALIFORNIA where he (ahauth) is?
Each computer internal mapping is calibrated specifically for the vehicle it was intended.Although the SEQ is probably close to weight and other perameters of the L/C. So mabye there wouldnt be to big an issue afterall.
Its nice to know they interchange like that. That opens up alot of new doors for people.
GREAT POST FOR #1
