Default Power Steering for 78 FJ40

I have a 1978 FJ40 with no power steering and was wondering if they have a conversion kit or if I can take a late model power steering out of another vehicle and adapt it for my use. Any help would be helpful thanks.Ken

Try the discussion boards here: COOLCRUISERS.COM - Toyota Land Cruiser Parts & Restoration
The manual to power steering conversion seems to be fairly common.

Good luck,

Randy

I have a 1979 fj40. I frequent cool cruisers and IH8MUD.com - "The Truth is in the Rocks" whenever I have any questions. I know there is a gm saginaw conversion as well as a toyota pickup conversion. Mine has factory pwr steering so I can't offer an opinion.

I did a Astro Van conversion a few years back with the help af a very good friend. I like it better than the Sagniaw conversion.

I actually adapted the FJ60 PS box to my '78 FJ, works quite nicely! Also use a GM PS pump since I am running a chevy SB. Can send you some pics once I get back into the states. Pretty straight forward install..using the original 2F or do you have a V8? Since I upgraded the radiator to a all aluminum racing type, spaced my FJ60 box off the frame with a 3/4 piece of plate steel...welded, drilled and tapped. Use Grade 8 bolts to secure and also nuts and lock washers on the inside for added strength since I go and 'play' alot. But, as many have said before, there are many options out there..just depends on what you want to do with it..just wanted the ease of moving my 38's with one hand while out on the trail!

Repectfully,
why-me

Oh, one more thing, upgraded all my steering parts to Marlin Crawler products..(Fj80 ends, tierod/draglink) and also upgraded the knuckles from the FJ60. Straight forward and not to mention you lose all the other useless junk underneath there!
