Default Pads & Rotors

I'm trying to change the pads and rotors on the front of my 2000 Lexus LX 470 (sounds easy, right?) and I can't figure out how to get the rotors off. The calipers are easy enough to remove and the pads can be replaced like any other car I've ever had, but I can't figure out how to remove the rotors. I signed up here hoping to find a downloadable PDF file that would cover this but have had no luck. I found all the info for a Tundra, but the calipers and wheel configuration are totally different. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Default Re: Pads & Rotors

I did this work on my 1997 Lancruiser a few months back. You need to remove the hub to get the rotors off if its set up like mine. You will need a hub wrench and may want to change the wheel bearing grease as well. From memory it goes something like this.
1. Take a chisel and remove the dust cap.
2. There is a lock washer inside that needs to be bent so you can loosen the big nut, hub wrench is like 24-30 mm cost about $15.
3. The hub and rotor will then slide out along with the bearings. Keep everything clean and keep track of what goes where.
4.I do not recall how the rotor seperates from hub. Look at the new rotors and it should be clear.
5. Put it back together.
6. Tightening the bearings is tricky. Some say you have to use a tool to measure the tightness. Or you can put it back where you found it or you can tighten it up real snug while you spin the hub and back it off a little.

Default wh the rotors?

How come you need to remove the rotors? I replaced pads, out with the old and in with the new, certainly no reason to remove the rotors in my case. So I'm curious, why do the rotors need to come off? How many miles on your vehicle? I have 75,000 miles, replaced just the rear pads, which surprised me that the rears went first, usually the fronts do most of the work.
